The freeze plugs are underneath the exhaust manifold. (on the back of the engine) Every freeze plug heater I have seen has been installed in the second from the passenger side hole. (between #1 and #2 cylinders)

I sure wish I could find a topper/cap whatever you want to call it like that in the US. Damn I'm envious.

I'm willing to bet that it's the valve that shuts off/turns on flow to the heater core. Sometimes the cable kinks as well.

The above are truly words of wisdom.

I too thought something along those lines, but never in a million years have put it so eloquently. :D

I'm not sure if the A2 is the same as the A1, but on the A1's you can access it from under the back seat. (you don't have to drop the tank)

I would doubt that.

I'm of no help here, but I'm amazed that in almost twenty years and five different A1's that I've never run into this problem.

The alternator is grounded through the engine no? Both red wires go to the battery and the blue one goes to the alternator light I believe.

I've often wondered if they did a recall on the leaking since all five of the A1's I've owned have had this problem.

You'll be just fine. Just don't lug it in the mountains. You'll fit right in with the semis with their hazzards on climbing passes in third gear. :)
