Seems like a fuel issue to me if you're not getting nasty whit smoke/vapor from your exhaust when cranking.

I'd be willing to bet if you used a 12.9 socket head cap screw (allen head) you'd be fine as far as strength goes.

I'd just like to reiterate Fatmobile's suggestion of the ratchet wrenches. I don't know how I've gone without these for so long. They really make things easy. Put them on your Christmas lists. Hillbilly tuning has never been easier. :D

I'm just babbling here, but somewhat thinking back to my past experiences with A1's. I had issues like this as well, and I wonder if it had to do with replacing fuel lines with something that didn't play well with diesel fuel. Both my caddy and jetta ended up with a nasty black sediment clogging the...

I can't imagine that an oil pan bolt would be difficult to use an ez-out on. I doubt it would bind like a bolt going into a water pump housing or head. (something not made of cast iron) I had to extract a broken off glow plug a few months ago. That was probably the most difficult bolt extraction for...

It's possible you just need to wiggle things around to get it to seat properly. This has happened to me before.

I know my original rabbit had one on it, so I know that they were available at one point. With fuel at 3.50 a gallon  it wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'd try swapping the starter first, as I recently had a problem like this. It's amazing how much difference a decent starter will make.

Gearwrenches (the ones with the switch) make a great tool for putting the 5mm (global moderator says 8mm  ) nuts on glow plugs. (when injector lines are installed) They are tapered so the nut will not slide through. Use a thin piece of cardboard to hold the nut in place and then slide it out wh...

Got it all figured out. Sorry for asking stupid questions. For some reason I didn't think the Bentley showed and exploded view of the starter. (The electrical section and automatic transmission chapters are the only ones that don't have any grease on them :D )
