In several new beetles I've seen this problem. I think it all goes back to a bad connection in the immobilizer circuit in instrument cluster harness. I've heard of people pulling the cluster and cleaning and bending connectors tighter for better contact and solving the problem for good. It's anew be...

best bet is to buy a later style one new and retrofit it, the yahoo diesel Vanagon group archives should have plenty of info in it. There aren't any new vanagon diesel radiators. The only other option is to have it rebuilt by a radiator shop, but that still leaves you with the dreaded high position ...

The bulkhead behind the fender bolt points also gets full of swiss cheese, and the floor section below it as well. You need...

I rebuild quite a few of these motors and I'd say about 50% of them need some head surfacing.. I'd guess I have at least 20 cars out there running around with shaved heads on them that are in good condition and in daily service.. and believe me I'd know right away if there were a problem too  ...

The shop I use always machines with the prechambers in place, they also check them for cracks or looseness. They should be tight when all is said and done.. I like the idea of peening around them though, adds a bit of insurance. If I had to guess I'd say that precup was cracked invisibly or internal...
