Key stock is the square steel bars that are put on moving shafts to index a pulley or lock a part(if key is tapered). I used 1/8" and it worked perfectly. You can buy it in 0ne foot lengths at ACE or Home Depot. Basically use your lifter hold down tool like you would use to replace shims when d...

Problem solved! Flywheel was off (advanced) when using existing hash mark for TDC. I tried the suggestions offered here and I found the most consistent way to determine TDC for me was to fab a wire pointer for crank pulley and remove valve cover and use key stock between cam and lifter shim on #1 in...

I have an extra one out of a 1981 Rabbit pick up and need one from a 1979 rabbit. Mine has the the "eye" on the end of the pedal side linkage and the vacuum hose plugs into the cannister. I need the one with the threaded clevis and has a nipple on the cannister for the hose to slip over. W...

Thanks to 82 vdub and Vince for your ideas. I think my problem does center around the crankshaft being at tdc and I was unaware that the gassers have no marks on flywheel. This explains why there are no definite marks on my flywheel as well. Must be a gasser transplant. To answer your questions, it ...

Timing and smoke

Let me start by stating this may be too long a post as it has been a frustrating problem I have been trying to solve for a while and am getting nowhere fast. Have a cup of JO on me and bare with my rant. I have a transplanted 1984 Jetta TD (1.6L CY code) in a 1982 Rabbit all done by the PO. When I g...

Thanks to all for the very good comments and suggestions. I waited to reply as I "think" I have solved my problem. When I got home Sunday evening, I first put an ohm meter on the battery cables. The + cable showed 13 ohms!!!, the - showed 0.3 ohms. I didn't go any further until I replaced ...

Thanks for the quick replies. No cold start out or in makes no difference and pushing down on pedal doesn't help. Coke may have a point about the starter as I was looking at CCA and voltage for the battery which were good when tested at shop where I bought the battery. I assumed the starter to be go...

Problem with hot starts

Hello, I have a 1981 rabbit 1.6L NA diesel. Newly rebuilt head, new rings and rod bearings, new head gasket and new battery. Injector pump shows no signs of losing prime as there are no bubbles evident in clear supply line. Injectors tested and set to 130 bar breaking pressure. Fast Glo plugs tested...

Thanks 82 Vdub, you may be on to something here. Never occured to me about the pump mount leaking but it makes sense as it has one large o ring as I recall. I will remove it tomorrow and replace the o ring and see what happens as I get braver in taking it for longer rides. Thanks again for the idea ...

Strange oil mess in engine compartment

OK, here is the deal. I have a 1.6 TD Caddy that I just used to haul a 5X8 trailer and 600 lbs of equipment 300 miles. Truck runs flawlessly with great power and economy.......that is until now! Just before getting back home, I have a 6% incline to climb that runs about 1.5 miles. I am a gauge watch...

Dash Dilema

I have a 1981 caddy with the proverbial "stiff upper lip" raised above the glove box. The rest of the dash is mint without any cracks I was wondering if anyone has a fix for smoothing down the raised lip over the glove box. I was thinking of my wife's hair dryer with hand pressure, but bef...
