It is a long shot, but you might want to see if that car has ever had that recall performed. If not, this one might be on VW. Surely there isn't a statute of limitations on safety recalls, is there? -Jeremy I just tried that this winter when I blew the heater core in my old Jetta and the local deal...

Re: Hey Mr. Joe--

I know I'm late to the party, and it is a long shot, but there was a massive recall that affected pretty much all A2's that revolved around the heater core leaking and spewing molten coolant all over the passenger. It is a long shot, but you might want to see if that car has ever had that recall pe...

As suggested by Duffer, I checked the condition of the O ring. The condition is MIA, must be why the valve leaks. :D It's been doing it for a long time, judging by the condition of the fenderwell below it. I just changed out the filter and there was no O ring in the filter box so I didn't think to c...

To close the loop on this one, it's the glow plug cycle.

If I would have been a little smarter a little faster I would have tested it by seeing if it did the same thing when the engine was warm.

It doesn't, so it must be the glow plugs.

thanks for the suggestions.

There's no external block heater on the car. I ran my hand all over the back of the engine block and there was no sign of leaking from the freeze plugs or the block. Carpet is not wet on the pass side floor or as far up as I can reach. The leak is just "appearing" beneath the firewall, the...

Thanks very much for the information and links. I'm really behind the curve on the later diesel versions, I'm used to the old Rabbits and there are a lot more wires and whatnot on this one.

thanks Andrew, I called AAA and had them haul it to the house, getting a ride home with a coworker.

I'll probably bypass the heater core as a test and plan to tear the dash out and make the full repair later.

1.6 NA filter heater valve O ring missing.....

Hey folks, I've got an easy couple questions on the 91 Jetta this time, I hope. First off, on the later style diesel filters (not the spin on type), I've noticed that there is a diesel leak around the connection fitting that is held to the filter with that "hairpin". That connection fittin...

The wiring should be pretty easy, it's the leak that's bothering me. Welp, it's 99% sure that it's the heater core leaking into the AC drain line. Starting to get the telltale windshield fog too. Don't know what else it could be and it's the general consensus of a few VW guys I called. The part they...

Thanks for the reply. I have also always run the Rabbits, this A2 is a first for me. Got coolant in the reservior and it is at the proper level. New water pump and thermostat 1000 miles ago with the timing belt change, they should be good. Just found a partially broken wire to the sensor on top of t...

Help with 91 Jetta leak and overheat, stranded at work!

Hey guys; I've got a 91 Jetta 1.6 NA leaking fluid and a light telling me it's hot and a gauge telling me it's not. I hadn't driven the Jetta since last Friday for various reasons. When I drove it home Friday, I noticed a smell like fresh mulch or maybe brake lining when I would stop and the air beh...

Me too. If I can't (bad back) or don't have time to do something, I have a local VW only guy I've known for years to do it. Same for my Volvos. Only exception is the Passat, it's under warranty till 2010 or another 40k. Thank God, that Audi 30v V6 is a little more complex than my trusty diesels.

Wow, I spent a LOT more for my 91 and it has a lot more miles. They are hard to find around here, mine was rust free and German build so I jumped on it. Commuting 75 miles a day x 27mpg @ $3.49/gallon made it a priority to find something. Someone was kind enough to install matching seats from a Cara...

The FF would be an awesome upgrade to the crummy AWY BUT the FF has the wrong style rear mount. Mk1s use studs on the diff and Mk2s use holes in the diff housing. Supposedly some transmissions have both holes and studs but I'm pretty sure the FF is not one of them. I saw that the mounts themselves ...

Thanks very much for the reply and advice. The axle assembly was new, not rebuilt, the cost difference was minimal so I got new. The guy doing the work has been working on VW's since air cooled days. Most recently, he's totally rebuilding VW's for resale, short version is that I trust him to install...
