To close the loop on this one, it's the glow plug cycle.

If I would have been a little smarter a little faster I would have tested it by seeing if it did the same thing when the engine was warm.

It doesn't, so it must be the glow plugs.

Me too. If I can't (bad back) or don't have time to do something, I have a local VW only guy I've known for years to do it. Same for my Volvos. Only exception is the Passat, it's under warranty till 2010 or another 40k. Thank God, that Audi 30v V6 is a little more complex than my trusty diesels.
