Re: 020 Tranny Replacement Clarity, please

"GC will work" That is very good news. I wish I could do a replacement with a 5-speed, but, like I wrote at the top of this thread, early 80s VW transmissions are hard to come by in this back-woods area I live in, and getting them shipped off the Internet basically doubles the price. So, I...

Re: 020 Tranny Replacement Clarity, please

Bob, thank you SO much for your help. VERY helpful. Here's the latest: I was finally able to track down two 4-speed transmissions from a salvage yard about 2 hours away. The transmission I removed from my truck was a 5-speed, but, if a 4-speed will work, that's totally fine with me (I don't drive fa...

Re: 020 Tranny Replacement Clarity, please

Thanks Bob. Excellent info. I'll call the salvage yard back today, and ask about the 84 Cabriolet. Hopefully, they'll give me the codes over the phone. Yesterday, they told me they don't normally get the codes until the customer is at their yard, but I explained my "hour's drive" situation...

020 Tranny Replacement Clarity, please

Hello, I'm in the process of replacing the transmission in my 1981 VW Diesel Truck (5-speed, manual transmission), and, although I've done a lot of research on replacing it with a used transmission, I'm still not 100-percent clear on some things, and I really want to be sure about the replacement. T...

Stuck Valve Stem Seal Advice, please

Hello all, Head's off my 1.6L, camshaft's off, two valves/springs/keepers are out, but I can't get the valve stem oil seals out. My timing belt broke at low speed -- thankfully -- and two of my valves were bent. I had to tap them (fairly hard) on the top of the stem to get them out. So, I'm wonderin...

You guys are the best! Too much pressure... that's what I thought. Those little pipes do have awfully thick walls. 82vdub wrote: "<i>one of the bolts on your IP is loose</i>" I thought it might be that... one them is actually broken. It's been broken for a couple of years, and in that time...

Can I fix my cracked pipe?

I have a hairline crack at the end of my No. 2 injection pipe (from the pump to the injector), and I was wondering if I could use a very small piece of fuel hose to connect an end from a previous cracked pipe (yes, this has happened before, long story), and then put a hose clamp on each end of the f...

GOOD NEWS! I think I have discovered what was causing my stubborn fuel problem, and it's interesting: It was that a bolt broke lose on my "injection pump mounting plate," and it was just flopping around below the IP (and making a hell of a metallic racket), and that made the IP rattle arou...

Zeroing in on Stubborn Fuel Problem?

1981 VW diesel truck Am I starting to zero in on my stubborn fuel problem? When I finally get it started, I drive for about a mile (no problems at all), and then come back and park in the driveway and let it idle. It will idle perfectly for about 4 minutes, and then it will do a sudden bog, like it'...

I was just reading up on things after doing a search for "sputter," and I came across a dieselsnowmobile post that reads: <i>"So if your battery/alternator is ever dieing, it has to be pretty dead to stop fuel to the IP. I tested this once after an alternator went out at the start of ...

Thanks bscutt and 82vdub I did a search for "vacuum gauge" and read-up. One of the posts read: <i>"My 91 jetta has done the same thing before, and the first thing I did was change the fuel filter, it was the only thing that made sense, the previous one on there only had like 800 miles...

Fuel delivery problem?

1981 VW truck Diesel LX After about 3- 5 minutes of driving, my truck starts to act like it's struggling to get fuel, and then it stalls. After I restart, it'll run fine again, for a few more minutes, and then the same thing happens. I replaced the fuel filter... no change. I removed the air filter ...

Perfect! I'll lube the spring (it makes so much sense, why didn't I think of that?)

I'll come back and post whether it worked or not... sounds like it will.
