Re: Brake Problems...

Well as he's not driving a rubbish Rabbit, nor a grubby Golf, but a dashing Dasher, the brake lines are external  PTFE tape? Shouldn't need that, as the sealing does not rely on the threads. If it's to prevent fluid rising up the threads/air entering, whilst nipple is loosened, then the nip...

Re: Brake Problems...

Hi,
Does your parking brake work correctly, ie rear wheels locked on within 3 clicks?
Is the rear regulator working correctly if there is one?
Maybe there is a leak at the master cylinder.
What difference does having the engine running make?

Re: 1.6 Engine Troubles!!

Referring to your second head, 4 cracks could mean a catastrophic event, like adding cold water to an overheated engine, but unlikely. More likely at least 3 cracks are superficial.Logic being that the first real crack would prevent further driving due to pressurized watergushing out. Common betwee...

Re: 1.6 Engine Troubles!!

Where are the cracks in the head? Some cracks are superficial, and most used heads have them. It may still be a blown headgasket, or incorrectly torqued down. It's a rare crack that lays dormant waiting for a new gasket Mixing hydraulic and shimmed heads and blocks may require blocking off of some ...

Re: Battery light on, but alternator OK

I guess it's easy to forget how the circuit works if it has the habit of working for 20yrs between acting up. Useful to remember the battery turns the light on and the alt lead turns it off. My alternator seems to wait about 5 seconds to begin charge @ 850rpm, or as you say can be bli...

Re: New To Me Diesel Rabbit Won't Start. Ran Fine on Test Drive.

Yeah, there are more common sources of air leaving the pump when none appears to be entering. But if there is no air in the line before reusing this o-ring. A sudden appearance of air would mean the old one just wasn't good enough to use again. Indeed! However if you've never tweeked a small job in...

Re: 1.6 Engine Troubles!!

Lol. How did I not read smoke in the filler tank  ? Probably because it was 4am local time here! Products from combustion do include water, but that takes a long time to accumulate. Definitely headgasket. Maybe damaged/weakened by your previous faulty waterpump. Can a new pump be faulty? Wha...

Re: 1.6 Engine Troubles!!

No direct link. Why did you change your water pump? It's not something done on a whim :!:
Likely a piston ring issue. Possibly a head gasket, or exhaust valve stem seals.

Re: New To Me Diesel Rabbit Won't Start. Ran Fine on Test Drive.

That o-ring seals outside air from getting to the pump input. You would know if it leaks by seeing air in the clear fuel line on the output. Unless your shaft seal was leaking, which, on an old pump is more likely, due to the ingress of dirt scratching the shaft. As a matter or interest, I have a br...

Replace only necessary, if square profile, and clearly not holding cover away from body, otherwise discretionary.

Re: New To Me Diesel Rabbit Won't Start. Ran Fine on Test Drive.

IIRC the advance seals are 30 by 3mm. $0.50 Nothing special needed, as any diesel swelling adds to the seal!

Re: setting injector pump timing by ear

I see the timing advance is working when using my timing light with the timing adapter. It changes the timing at the slightest increase in engine speed, but above a certain RPM the TDC mark 'disappears'. I suspect the piezoelectric unit is picking up some other vibration and falsely triggering the ...

Re: Mechanical Head

Measure all gaps between cam and shims 'off lobe'. They will be fine or too tight. Spec is 8 thou inlet and 12 thou exhaust. IMO 4 and 8 are fine for wear limit Remove each shim, measure and place on a numbered sheet of paper. If shims are differently sized you may be able to swap a few around to g...

Is it harder to pull than to push back in?

Re: setting injector pump timing by ear

Dodgeball,
It could be that at idle the pump is already fully advanced, especially if you have raised internal pump pressure, and advance spring is weak through age. Try pulling advance lever with engine off and compare it's stiffness with pulling at idle
Ooops make that Dodgeboy
