Re: Injection pump throttle shaft question

I have made some progress by trial and error, rotating the control shaft, and also re-checking my timing - the valve timing was slightly off. It's running now, but with what seems like too much white smoke. advancing the timing a lot reduces the amount of smoke, but it still didn't smoke this much b...

Re: Injection pump throttle shaft question

I didn't mark it, but it seems like it should at least stay running with the throttle open. Perhaps I'm not understanding how it works. Seems to me like the shaft can turn about 60 degrees, by hand; all the way left is closed, right is wide open. should at least stay running anywhere in between. but...

Injection pump throttle shaft question

So I removed the throttle lever from my newly rebuilt injection pump because I wanted to swap in the lower-profile vanagon lever. But then I realized it wouldn't fit, and that the original would fit under the lid anyway. So I put the lever and springs back on (did this before installing it), and ins...

finally!

Ok, for for Those to Come After: After a couple weeks of soaking it, beating on it, and cursing at it, what finally worked was putting one of the 13mm bolts that hold it together back in, then wedging the hard plastic handle of a wire brush in above it (anything the right size will do), and backing ...

They were just to tear down the head and check it over, and do a valve job. They checked it for warpage and it's fine, so no milling needed. I've had 3 VW diesel heads done by this shop, and 2 have over 5000 miles on them and they've been fine. I friend had one other done and as far as I know it's f...

Prechamber insert fell out ?!?

So I brought my 1.6TD head into the local machine shop, and apparently as they were tearing it down, one of the prechamber inserts fell out. Seems kind of unlikely to me, but question is, what do I do now? Have them press it back in and move on? replace it ? Time for a new head? Other than the norma...

Turbo rebuild help

Anyone have any tricks for separating the 2 halves of my T3 turbo? Much as I bang on it it won't budge. Makes me wonder if I'm missing something.

FYI I found this clip on rebuilding a Garrett T3/T4 turbo on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2CwBwrdnvA

Parting out '82 Quantum TD wagon body

I have an '82 Quantum TD wagon that I am parting out. I'm taking the engine and everything, and spoken for are the left tail lights (right is busted), front parking light lenses, A/C controls, and radiator and fans (tentatively). No diesel tach, clock doesn't work. Everything else is up for grabs, P...

intermediate shaft tightness

Can anyone tell me how tight the int. shaft pulley should be (i.e., hard to turn) with a new set of bearings ? It doesn't spin freely, but it's pretty easy to turn by hand. I'm wondering if this is OK before I start putting it back together. Thanks.

So I finally got around to tackling the int. shaft bearing replacement. First attempt ended badly when I tried to use the damaged shaft as a tool to put the new inside bearing in - the way in which it cracked didn't leave a flat enough lip to drive the new bearing in, and I ended up dinging it up pr...

you know, it never really did. It only smokes for about 30-60 seconds, more on cold mornings. After it warms up a bit, it runs fine,no smoke. So I decided to just drive it and not worry. I think if the smoke *doesn't* go away when it warms up, then there are problems that should be addressed. But af...

my '96 passat does this, too - it's not too bad, only lasts a few minutes - anyone know if there is a problem with just putting up with it, rather than replacing the pulley/damper ?
