My guess is the wrong size bushing, it looked like the diameter was smaller, but figured it was because I tapped the old one. Will grab another and see if that makes it easier.

OK, I bow to the greater minds. Got the old starter off, removed old bushing, cleaned, lubed and replaced with new bushing. Felt proud of myself, nothing left to do but bolt new one on. Car has a dent in the oil pan like it ran over something along with a pushed in radiator support. Took a little jiggle and wiggle but it came loose.
