Thanks for all tips! You guys are what got it up and running in the first place.

Will have time to try out some of the advice next week, I'm in Iowa and Wisconsin for the next few days and weekend.

Thanks for the oil trick Hagar, I never would have come up with that :D

Thanks, this was the info I was looking for. Only reason I thought about a re-ring was I would have the head off, trying to figure if it would be worth doing. Car ran well before, not really much blow-by or oil burning. Don't think I've got the space to remove the engine right now anyway, and I like...

Have to replace head gasket, how hard to do a ring job with?

Well, I had it on the road for a little while  My oil leak between head and block at cylinders 2 and 3 started using coolant, started harder-eventually not at all. I'm going to assume failed headgasket finally-car sat for 13 years and most lines/seals have been replaced by now. Newbie at cars ...

My guess is the wrong size bushing, it looked like the diameter was smaller, but figured it was because I tapped the old one. Will grab another and see if that makes it easier.

Didn't think I was that inept, but it's been a long couple days. :?

Starter-getting armature shaft in the bushing

OK, I bow to the greater minds. Got the old starter off, removed old bushing, cleaned, lubed and replaced with new bushing. Felt proud of myself, nothing left to do but bolt new one on. I cannot get the armature shaft in the bushing. Spent a few hours on the hit or miss method and would like...

Thanks all, starter is off! :D

Car has a dent in the oil pan like it ran over something along with a pushed in radiator support. Took a little jiggle and wiggle but it came loose.

Will remove and replace bushing, but any recommendation for sealing compound the Bentley recommends?

Problems removing starter

Hi all, My starter started heating up and smoking a bit when cranking, so I'm trying to replace it. Got the upper bolt loose just fine and the lower one turned a few times, then just kept turning. Bolt will turn, hit a spot it almost grabs, then spin freely-repeat. End result is I can't take the sta...

Cleaning the in tank screen

Can someone break down how to clean the tank screen for me, newbie question I know. Drawing air into the lines and that seems to be the only spot left.

Not sure if I can blow it out or do I go in access for fuel sender unit or drop the tank.

Help appreciated as always. :D

Update Took off the positive battery lead from starter-ran to get a replacement just in case. Local parts store didn't have one so brought it back home. Reconnected everything and thought I would try the jumper cable trick above. Ran it 20 minutes, stopped and shut the ignition off. Turned the key j...

Cranked it a few times when I got home-definitely slower after the first round. Will take the starter off and give it the whatsover and see if that helps. When I timed the beast, I retarded it just a bit from original-supposed to reduce emissions when using biodiesel & WVO-we'll see when it's de...

I used the type of puller you thread bolts through(always mix the types up), a couple washers, and nuts to fit the bolts. Glue, solder, weld, epoxy,or whatever the washers to the nuts. Make sure the washers are larger than the two small holes of the sprocket. Feed the nut/washer combo through the la...

Forgot to mention timing belt and alternator belt replaced  Had fun timing for the first time but runs well. The positive battery lead to the starter also looks a bit odd-not grease but some discoloring. Also a source of problem? Could you explain why the starter would work better cold than ho...

Question about diesel start-stop

Since this is my first diesel and it just made it on the road about 1 week ago I have a general start-up question. Do diesels need to sit for a bit before restarting warm? When I first start it cold, it fires right up. Shut it off, put a few gallons of diesel in, start it warm-takes a bit more to tu...

Thanks All, It Lives

Just a quick note to thank all on the forum for their help. This was my first diesel and most of my DIY car repair experience. The Bunny starts right up now after being quiet for over 13 years and has hit a top speed of 60 mph(just been around town, haven't gotten far yet). It's been "hillbilly...
