The light is triggered by a timer that is hooked up to the temperature sender to tell the glow plug relay how long the plugs should stay on. Is there any way to make the glow plugs come on no matter what the temp of the engine is? Like the mercedes glow plug relay mod? Can you unplug the connection...

Cold Start Noise

What causes the extra clacking from a diesel when it has sat overnight and the engine is cold? The noise that goes away after it has warmed up. (not the valve/lifter ticking from cold oil/low oil pressure).

Thanks for all the replies. I unplugged it and plugged it back in the same way a few days ago. That was all I did; coolant level was fine. It hasn't blinked since (except when the vehicle starts for a few seconds like its supposed to) and I've driven a few hundred more miles. Crazy old cars!

Flashing Coolant Light

Ok I'm perplexed. For what problems does the coolant light flash for? Friday Night I drove from Chicago to Steven's Point Wisconson. About 3/4 into the trip my light started flashing. Of course I pulled off the interstate right away to investigate. The engine wasn't steaming, didn't seem any hotter ...

Ususally I wouldn't connect an interior rattle with a major problem since these old VW's are rattle prone  but I remember reading, I think it was a Hagar post, that the cold start handle could be indicative of internal pump pressure problems. I think it was something along the lines if it wasn...

Cold Start Handle Vibrates

When my cold start handle is pushed in all the way at idle the is no sound, as soon as I start to accelerate it will vibrate and "buzz" and will continue while driving until the point that it bugs me enough that I pull it out to the first notch. Just wondering if this is a sign of a failin...

Piston Slap?

Forgive me, I'm fairly new to automotive mechanics in general. What exactly is piston slap and what does it sound like in a diesel context? How about compared to the sound the IP makes, or perhaps bad injectors or valves hitting a piston? I know these are qualitative, but try your best! Just ...

So, I've always wondered, what actually causes the clacking sound on a diesel? The noise I'm hearing on VO sounds an awful lot like when I start my car when its cold; that clacky, rattly sound that eventually goes away once warmed up. I'm just trying to understand how my car works a little better.

Yep..no air in the lines. All the lines in my engine compartment are clear and not 1 air bubble is entering the IP and all different rpms. I'm gonna mess with the timing this weekend I think.. I've also been reading in the general forum about checking internal pump pressures. I need to fabricate (ha...

Everyday I drive back and forth to school down country roads @ >55 mph for an hour each way. The past few days its been using veg. It runs GREAT as long as the rpms are over ~2000rpms. Once it idles it gets extra "clacky" but it doesn't get worse the longer I drive. It starts after I've be...
