Re: 81 Rabbit 5 Speed Shifter Issue

ok I have to admit I have a box full of cassette tapes in the basement. However, that's a good tidbit of info to have. Yeah not getting any younger either. Just a few months from one of those decade birthdays, one you could never have convinced me I would ever see when I was in my 20s. We'll see how...

Re: 81 Rabbit 5 Speed Shifter Issue

I actually discovered those when after replacing "everything" and still having slop I had my son move the shifter while I looked underneath at all pivot points and then I found them. It's virtually impossible to find them if you don't have help unless of course you know that they are there...

Re: 81 Rabbit 5 Speed Shifter Issue

did you replace the bushings at the actual shifter lever too? They use the same ones used elsewhere, the black "top hat" bushings. There is one on either side of the shifter pivot up inside the cylindrical housing that is right under the shifter handle. There are some other points that wea...

Re: gas tank "sensor"?

there is a separate vent line that comes from the tank back up to the filler neck. if it's clogged the air in the tank will have no escape path when filling the tank so fuel will go in more slowly then normal. Filler nozzles sense the back pressure from the tank to shut them off. It's possible the a...

Re: Heavy Smoke in Exhaust

a compression test would be a good idea. Also Jack the forum owner sells rebuilt injectors so if you have one sticking a set of rebuilt injectors would be a very good investment. Leaking injectors can cause some nasty overfueling problems. Also someone may have turned the pump up for more power but ...

Re: 82 Vanagon Diesel starting question

yes that's why you need the relay. otherwise your starter will keep running! I never messed around with a vanagon, only the old VW buses in the mid 60s Suspect the ignition switch may be the problem though.

Re: 82 Vanagon Diesel starting question

this could be an ignition switch failure. When you crank the starter it basically cuts power to the regular circuits providing power to non-essential items. Most if not all of this is via the "X-relay" but I believe it's all controlled by contacts in the ignition switch. You would probably...

yep I have to force myself to reread everything I type. have fat finger syndrome...and dyslexic fingers. I try to blame it on the keyboard but no one is buying that.

Re: 1.6 diesel Dasher rebuild questions

I know you meant 11mm so just clarifying for the sake of the post. 1.5's and early 1.6's used 11mm head bolts vs 12mm in the later engines.

Re: Highest MPG

ditto on the insane commuter speeds. Even at 5:30 AM they all think they are running the indy 500. How late can you be at 0530? Afternoons vary since I leave at 4 pm, sometimes it's a race, other times running pretty consistent 55-60 in the 50 zone. Thus I get 42-44 most of the time.

Re: Highest MPG

I drive mine like it's a GTI and get 42-44 no matter what. Driving it real easy gets me about 45-46 and that's it. FF 5 speed with the .76 top gear (older version)

Re: 81 Rabbit Blower Motor Removal

I like the Volvo's, my neighbor ran over 300K on his before donating it (early 90s 940). However if you have a transmission problem the newer ones run into several thousand to replace. He still has some newer ones and swears by them, all bought used. But I agree, would not want to do much work on th...
