I have never changed one but they are probably the hardest to do. I would never call it quits on a diesel Rabbit for a bad motor mount, even if you can't do it yourself it's worth the money to get it fixed, assuming the rest of the car is in relatively good condition. Changing involves removing the ...

Well, all edit stuff aside, my 80 and 82 both averaged around 42mpg in mixed driving, tops was 46 on the '80. In the winter when it's really cold I was getting about 39 because of the short hops to work and also with A/C on in the 82 I got as low as 39 in the summer. 36 isn't terrible but it definit...

I have gotten best mileage by winding out the gears to about 3000 rpm before shifting, but with light pedal pressure. Just let it wind up. Also chekc all the usual culprits, tire pressure, wheel bearings, dragging brakes, even bad alignment. Also if the IP is leaking more than a drop every few minut...

Haven't heard that one. I recommend using the FelPro no-retorque gaskets. I use them exclusively with great results as does a friend who has about 8 Rabbit diesels. The are about twice as much as the OEM but are very high quality and should outlast the OEM ones in my opinion.

Yeah I've done a little under-the-car work using a forklift like that but I chained the car to the forklift. That's just a little scary! Maybe a few 4X4 posts would give a little more margin of safety.

I really want my own 2-post lift and a big empty garage to go with it!

I also use anti-seize compound on the threads, just a light coating. I never used to tap out holes or use anti-seize on my old American V8 and inline 6 rebuilds, but there's a noticeable difference when you do. Just proves I'm not too old to learn new wrenching techniques! Now that's standard operat...

The tap is 11mm X 1.5 I just bought one for my '81 project motor and my son's Corrado head swap.

I'm going for the stock bolts, they are more expensive than the 12mm ones (used on my 82) but I haven't seen stud kits. Im sure they're available but probably costly in the 11mm version.

Well, if I didn't already have an '06, I'd probably wait for the '08, but I have to say I'm very pleased with this car. It's 13 months old, around 14K miles on it and runs perfectly. Did a trip a few weeks ago to Philadelphia and back in the same day, averaged 80 MPH and 42 MPG. It drives flawlessly...

Going soon, anyone who wants them can have them cheap. I need to make room for a 93 Passat TD parts car.

Also have a good dash blue, needs cleaning but no cracks, complete interior A/C system.

Wanted - Speedometer head for 79 diesel Rabbit

Mine sticks at about 40 mph and stays there. Mileage not important, I'll take whatever is lying around. I think the '80 US made one will work but I'm not sure about that.

Complete gauge cluster is ok too, I'm open to suggestion.

Pair of doors from '81 2 door Rabbit Northern VA

I have a pair of decent doorrs from a 2 dr Rabbit. Both have side glass, no vent windows. One door has a little bit of rust on one seam and might be rusting through (inner skin only), but they are otherwise in pretty good shape. I'm tired of storing them For now pics and doors are on Craigslist in W...

Hagar, I have a Gates belt tension gage I bought on Ebay, thinking I could use it to establish a reasonable tension setting for timing belts. Of course I never got around to it, but I wonder if anyone on the forum had the same plan. The gage is simple - it's spring loaded and you push on the belt wi...

Use a steering wheel puller with nuts and flat washers through the pulley holes. it will come off usually with a resounding bang.

The most common cause I've seen is where the gas cap is not tight, it triggers the check engine light due to a fault in the evaporative emission control system. I was told to tighten the cap until at least 3 clicks are heard. If you haven't been doing that it's an easy fix. If not, you're probably g...
