86 Cabby with a 1.6 TD has developed a habit of waiting about a second or two after the ignition key shuts everything else off. Any ideas? Crud in the stop solenoid? Pretty darn consistent each time. Thanks,
Steve

Re: Sudden death; no restart.
I did check the outbolt; might be a little slow, but I could blow air through it at more or less the same rate as other outbolts I have. I seldom use the little truck, and this particular trip was less than 5 miles round trip, so I doubt if heat was the issue. Looking at it more carefully I would ha...

Re: Sudden death; no restart.
Took the IP out yesterday and took the head off of it; the distributor plunger was broken right at the entry into the head. The control collar had also seized on the plunger and had ripped off the pin that connects the governor to the control collar. The plunger was so tight in the head that I could...

Re: Sudden death; no restart.
It may be a few weeks, but I'll let you know, and post a picture or two.
Lucky for me I was only a quarter mile from home when it happened, but I'm still bummed to be without my Caddy, and no time to fix it.

Re: Sudden death; no restart.
Oh, no; timing belt is fine, has less than 15K on it. Wouldn't there have been all kinds of noisy piston valve contact at the time of breakage and then afterwards with all of the cranking I did trying to get it to pump fuel? Anyway, the belt is still there in fine shape. But I'm glad to know that I'...

Re: Sudden death; no restart.
Thanks, guys; good ideas, and I followed up on both, but I'm afraid it's not going to be so easy for me. I did get it to move some fuel through the out bolt, but with nothing coming out of the delivery lines, I finally put a dial indicator in it and rotated the engine several times: no movement on t...

Sudden death; no restart.
Traveling 55mph, my caddy just died all of a sudden; no coughing, no spluttering; fine one second completely off the next. Towed it home, couldn't get the pump to move any fuel at all; wouldn't pull it from a bottle, even holding the clear fuel line vertical while cranking, the fuel in the line won'...

So, it's leaking around the bolt that holds the valve cover on? I'm not familiar with that valve cover, but it wouldn't hurt to completely remove the nut, even if the stud comes with it; you'll be able to see if there's an O ring there or not. In either case it should just bolt right back up. There'...

A sudden change is a little odd; usually it just gets progressively worse as the bushings wear. They can get completely worn then break and fall out, I guess. Another possibility would be that the shift rod clamp that holds the selector lever on the shift rod isn't tight enough, and it skipped a spl...

I test through the injectors holes; too hard to get to the two glow plugs behind the injection pump, but it does mean you need new injector heat shields when you re-install the injectors. Starter RPM is a big deal for starting a diesel, especially in the cold; if the starter is old, just taking it a...

Yep, strange for sure. I know that when you remove the thermostat, you can look up into the water pump and see the propeller; so while it's open turn the pump pulley and see if the propeller turns. The Bentley says that the propeller can get loose on the shaft; I'll bet that's your problem. It sugge...

Regarding the noise, if retarding the timing has made no difference, I would start to wonder about other possibilities; there's no chance that you've got valve/piston contact? As I understand it, there's no unusual noise at idle, at high rpm, and when warmed up ; it's only a problem just above idle ...
