tdi longevity
I'm considering a <a href="http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/cto/1196042208.html">'96 passat tdi</a> (with Greasecar kit and add-ons) for sale. It has 217,000mi, but seems like it's probably been well taken care of. How long can one expect a well-maintained tdi to last? How long have some ...

I did the feeler gage method when I first ran into the mark just to make sure I knew what I was looking at. I'd not heard of the other method of finding the exact middle of the two marks. That seems like it might be more accurate than watching a wire bob up and down. Maybe that should be my next thi...

Yeah. Maybe this is getting at part of the issue. My TDC mark is somewhat homemade. As I think has been mentioned before on the forum, when an engine is rebuilt it is possible to mess things up and make the TDC mark a certain amount off. My engine has been rebuilt, and I found out about my TDC mark ...

Dang. :( I set the Cam timing when I put the head back on. (I don't have one of those fancy bolt-on valve spring compressors that let you replace springs without removing the head, so I took it off to replace the springs. I have to admit that's the biggest job I've done to date. Replacing the IP wou...

I'd go the route of loosening individual injector pipes so the particular injector is not actuating, and then revving the engine. Re-tighten the pipe to spec and loosen the next, then rev again, and so on. I've tried that... twice (since I'd hoped it might be an injector.) The noise persisted throu...

Engine Noise - now completely stumped
I've been trying to figure out an engine noise in my '82 Audi diesel for over a year now, tinkering with it on an off. I posted about it before, but thought that I could condense information into an easier to follow post. It's a metallic ticking/tapping sound that appears around 2500rpm or so and ge...

How cloudy is cloudy?
I'm kind of new to the WVO world. I bought an already converted car a little over a month ago (and have been slowly working on a fuel leak for the last week or so, but that's another story!). So I'm working on finding & evaluating sources and building a filteration system. Some things that I've ...

Thanks for the suggestions. I removed all the accessory belts today (and had some thoughts about why newer cars have a serpentine belt...) and the noise persists. The idea of a broken valve spring seems right to me. So I guess I'll need a valve compressor tool. I'm not in a position right now to be ...
