Re: Highest MPG
I'm just running 175/70R13s. My 91 has the silly AWY tranny with 185/65R14s and can only do low to mid 50's with it right now. Alignment is an 1/8" off though, I need to fix that.

Highest MPG
Just curious what the highest MPG you guys have seen in your diesels. With my mostly highway commute, I slowed to a top speed of 58mph and have been getting low 60's (over the course of 5 tank fulls) on my 89 (1.6 NA with AOP tranny). Personal high was 63.32 mpg over 740 miles. My longest tank was 8...

Re: Red Antifreeze
Thanks, this is for my 89 Jetta (not TDI), I swore I put this in the "VW Diesel (General)" page, not sure why it was moved. I'll hope it is good. I have to change the thermostat out once I can trust my gauge again, at which point I'll probably switch back to green antifreeze.

Red Antifreeze
Temp gauge was showing the engine was hot and i suspected the thermostat was froze shut, so I took the it out while parked at a rest stop and wired it open and put it back. I was going to use just water, but a trucker gave me red antifreeze, being in a desporate situation, I took it. Are there any i...

Re: Cooling Problem
Well, I am not a 100% sure, but pretty cure it was the restrictor in the line. When I replaced the pump, it looked fine. I could not get the pump turbine to spin on the shaft at all. The edges of the pump were wore compared to the new pump, but that was probably just normal erosion from pumping. Sin...

Re: Cooling Problem
OMG! I did not know that was even there, it is gone now. It is not in my 89 Jetta. Well, that pretty much wasted my Saturday replacing the pump. The radiator was shot and while I replaced the thermostat, I replaced the two hard to get to hoses, so that was not a complete waste. Thanks for the info.

Re: Cooling Problem
I replaced the pump, and so far so good. Sure as heck wish I would have just done it 2 months ago when I replaced the timing belt, would have saved me a lot of time, basically did it all over again. What exactly is the restrictor? While I had it all apart, I flushed every hose 6 ways from Sunday. I ...

Re: Cooling Problem
Thanks, that has to be it. I should at least be getting water to my heater core no matter the thermostat position. I have the newer style sphere holding tank and I do not believe I can see the water coming from the little hose. I know what you mean though, I definitely could see it on my old Rabbit.

Cooling Problem
My 91 VW NA Diesel Jetta will not cool. I have replaced the radiator and now the thermostat with an 80C. Right now, I start up the engine, it will slowly warm up until it gets too hot I have to shut the engine off. I cannot feel hot water in the hoses much past a foot from the engine. My heater will...

Finally got around to looking at it. Come to find out, someone had already cut and twisted the seat wires at the seat belt. So, I cut, twisted, and soldered them together at the door to keep them coming apart, then shoved the wire into the frame of the car to protect them from any movement. I did no...

Had to Jump My Starter This Morning
Went to go to work but the car would not crank at all. I ended up taking a wire with alligator clamps on both ends (that I keep from emergencies like this) and jumped the small wire that feeds the solenoid at the starter to the POS on the battery to get it started. So, the Key is not feeding the sta...

It is amazing with German engineering that they seemed to have missed a basic principle on this, and that is you NEVER EVER put an idler on the tension/pulling side of a belt, it should always be on the untension side. Since VW put it on the tension side, the engine turning the alternator is putting...
