Re: Wintertime hard starting

All is well now. I was getting air in the fuel line. That made it crank for a long time until it got a good amount of fuel. Fixed the air leak.
I also put in 5w-30 oil. Spins faster now; starts good.

Re: Wintertime hard starting

I'll try leaving the cold start knob in when cranking and pull it out when it starts. I have found that pressing the accelerator while cranking helps it start a little sooner. But, I wonder if I have another problem at the same time. I can be driving along doing fine but when I slow to a stop for a ...

Re: Wintertime hard starting

I have some concern about synthetic oil making for oil leaks. Maybe I'll try a 10w-30 diesel rated oil.

Re: Wintertime hard starting

What about a thinner oil like 5W30 instead of my current 15W40? Would this allow it to spin faster when cold? Maybe start more readily?

Wintertime hard starting

My '89 Jetta with 1.6NA starts great 8 months of the year. Hit the key, I think one revolution of the engine and it's running. Does not like to start in the winter. Pulled the injectors to view the glow plugs. They all glow cherry red. Checked the compression. Three were about 475 and one was 430. C...

Stuck Heatshields

Took the injectors out so I can do a compression test. One heatshield stuck to one of the injectors as it was removed. That's okay.

Other three are stuck in place down in the head. Anyone know a trick for getting these to come loose? They're pretty stuck.

Re: 5 speed transmission leaking

So I did a major cleaning of the area of the leak. It looks like it s actually coming from where the passenger side axle bolts to the transmission. Then it slowly runs to the joint in the transmission halves. Fooled me at first.

5 speed transmission leaking

Suddenly my manual transmission started leaking gear lube. It appears to be at a joint where two halves of the housing bolt together. I wonder how I could fix this. It leaks pretty fast.

Re: Timing Belt Tracking

So I put a couple straight edges on the sprockets. I don't see anything in the way of miss-alignment. I stood there watching as the engine ran and now see that the belt doesn't go around all the sprockets in a straight line. At one place the belt bumps over. I don't know if that's the right way to s...

Re: Timing Belt Tracking

That being the case, I wonder how I get the belt to stop hugging the passenger side lip of the tensioner pully and track straight.

Timing Belt Tracking

After about 4000 miles of running after my rebuild I've noticed the timing belt has gotten narrower by about 1/8th inch. It's rubbing on the outboard lip of the tensioner pully.

Is there supposed to be a spacer washer between the tensioner and the engine block? Maybe I forgot to install it.

Just thought I'd let you all know that I found an AGS in NY. Had it shipped to me. It's installed and all is well once again.

Re: 5 speed trans for 1.6na

Surfcam: I'd like to discuss buying the AGS one from you. I agonize over the shipping cost. I've been trying to locate one closer to Michigan. But let's discuss. Maybe a PM is best? I don't know which is the "screamer" trans that turns high RPMs on the highway. I want to stay away from tha...

Re: parting out 300 vws, most diesel

I'm in need of a replacement 5-speed manual trans. AGS code or similar.
