The gasket that was on my engine was a two notch, but when I measured the piston protrusion with a dial indicator and used the chart in bentley, it told me I needed three. If compression ratio is not a factor in the gasket thickness, why have three different thickness and a chart to tell you which o...

replacing cylinder head, tips?
I am in the middle of replacing the cylinder head on an 89 NA Jetta. The PO cracked through TWO injector wells overtorquing the injectors. I bought a brand new head, since I was never able to find a rebuildable core. The car is reasonably clean, with only 135K on it, new shocks and tires, new brakes...

I'll probably get spanked here for dredging up too old of a thread, but I probably also would have been spanked for not reading the old threads before posting...  Anyway, I did do that dumb thing and tried to hold the cam in place to remove the sprocket with the silly locking tool, whic...

Glad to hear that you had the head redone. If I understand you correctly, you are talking about the sealing surface of the valves. They wear out, especially the exhaust valves. Now you need to get yourself a Bentley manual. Check ebay or abebooks.com if you can't afford or find a new one. I am in th...

My understanding of internal combustion engines is that yes, if you decrease the combustion chamber size, then yes, the compression ratio goes up. As was pointed out here, though, more major worries in a diesel are what happens when the valve opens and touches a piston because you've lowered the hea...

I've never bought a car with a bank loan, and in the last twenty-five years, have had over 70 different old/used vehicles. Sometimes they turn out to be real losers, like the 60 international 4WD truck I paid $2000 for and drove for about a month before it died, and I couldn't get any parts for it. ...
