Re: Tie Rod End

Just thought I would throw in my two cents. There was a question about the innards of a ball joint and as it's name implies it is a ball and socket. I used to grind the finish on these working for a machine company. I would take the forged blanks and stick the threaded end into an arbor, which was a...

Re: Small cracks in head - serious or still good?

I have my 1.6 TD apart and also have cracks in the head and prechambers. One crack in the head looks like a piece of paper might slide in. Is that too much? My neighbor is a welder and can weld up the cracks. Any issues w/ welding these heads? Also anyone know where to get new prechambers.

I would consider replacing the bolts w/ studs. When I was re-installing mine i cross threaded one. It's trickier putting them in than taking them out. Come to think of it, that's what she said

The Ford part no. is what I had as well. I went to Jegs and priced the 204-4706 and they are $212. The 251-4701 are $132. Headbolts.com shows the Ford part no. will fit the 1.6. I think I am going to order the ones for $132.

A related question to the head: I was planning on buying new cam followers but that has changed. Can you mix them up on the valves or do i have to buy new ones? It is a 1.6 TD solid lifter head.

I thought w/ all that global warming you guys would be tropical up there in Packer land :) I Understand your situation. I couldn't get fuel out of the distributor. Got a used one w/ the same result so I haven't messed w/ it since I got the diesel. I missed an intake and carb for $75

I have a gasser Caddy that i am definitely going w/ a carb. Probably could fabricate an adaptor and go directly to the stock intake w/ a sidedraft Weber. CIS parts are too expensive. I have also toyed w/ the idea of a Megasquirt. You would have to weld in bungs for the injectors but one could use al...

Did you just install the head gasket? If so, you may have torqued it incorrectly which may require another head gasket. You could try re-torquing it before buying a new gasket. If not, I would think it is time for a new head gasket and have the head checked for straightness. Mine is seeping too and ...

One thing I am going to do when I transplant the TD into my Caddy is try and swap in the new serpentine belt system. One might also swap to the Jetta v-belt setup w/ the adjusting bolt.

Well, I finally took a long look at the front brakes (My problem is I tend to always have something more pressing to do and until it breaks the problem goes on too long) and there is not even a proportioning valve. Any shade tree worth his salt could fix this, I said to myself. I replaced the hoses ...

My Jetta was smoking as well and has some blow by and was putting oil into the pcv system. I knew I needed a camshaft baffle but had not ordered one yet. As I was cruising the pick a part i saw a gasser w/ the valve cover off and just sitting there was the camshaft oil baffle. This must be my lucky ...

How did you bypass the modulator? My problem is the front brakes won't release fully. I rebuilt the calipers, master is a year old (sinking pedal) and the rod in the booster is not adjustable. It is really starting to get aggravating as my month old brake job needs to be done again as the pads are w...
