“That only leaves the head as the culprit. “If I read it right the second motor has same head as first so that would be my first thought also. Since the intake is open to atmosphere these engines don’t draw much vacuum, to pull oil through the guides like most gassers. But if you look at the c...

Ahistand, The thread seems to have gone other directions, but regarding your original? [Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on using Hylomar as a head gasket sealant] In a perfect world score of threads on VW diesel forums would not relate to head gasket issues (search found 449 on this site). ...

Fatmobile Some good work going on, sounds like your having lotsa fun. For a future enhancement think about a Sonalert (you can get one out of an old smoke detector to play with, need a driver though, or Radio Shack Piezo buzzer). You know Murphy is going to have you looking at the girls, or driving ...

jetta90 Most of the IP refurb work done by the home mechanic is predicated upon having a pump that is working satisfactorily, other than it leaks, or has excessive main shaft wear. If you’re having other pump related problems, or you want to change the fuel profile (increased performance, etc.) th...

During the injection cycle the cold air and cylinder sets back the autoignition point, allowing more fuel to collect in cylinder. When it finally does ignite the extra fuel can cause a more explosive combustion causing the classic cold knock inherent in most diesels. When everything’s up to runnin...

I‘ve read the thread about the choke point between the bushings, so I very carefully inspect under a strong loupe, and push very slowly until the first bushing hits the second bushing. So far I haven’t ran into a pump with the restriction, and from a production / engineering standpoint I can’t...

Nearly all high mileage pumps that are being rebuilt/re-sealed also have a lot of wear on main shaft bushings. This wear needs to be repaired to insure a long reliable service life. IMO (and experience) the main shaft bushings (Bosch pn 1 460 400 004, 2 per pump, about $5 ea.) in the older VE pumps,...

The pads on calipers don’t pull back very much when you let off brake pedal; they just quit clamping rotor (nothing in caliper to cause retraction of piston). That said I would assume that you are actually trying to drive truck and the front brakes are seizing (stopping truck) when you brake and r...

The crank snout is not as hard as you might think. Check keyways and everything else carefully, any slop left in this system will probably come back to haunt you. Pretty sure there is a torque bar tool in tool section for holding crank still. I use Loctite 40 hi-temp retaining compound liberally, to...

You’ve done some good work troubleshooting. From info you’ve provided sounds like 2 inner cylinders are getting fuel (smoke at exhaust) but not firing. Since they start firing after warm-up, would lead one to think that heat/expansion improves condition (rings??). You need fuel, pressure/heat an...
