Stick with the stock layout and you will not be disappointed. It's there for not one but at least two purposes.

Yes, this is the one that mounts the tranny to the driver's side "frame" rail. And yes, this is the 5-spd one that is needed in place of the flat 4 spd one. The 5-spd mount has a "hump" in it that fits over the raised mounting flange on the 5-spd trans. And yes I have another one...

BTW, there's a great write up on how to fab the later style dipstick somewhere on the Diesel Vanagon yahoo group. I believe Jim was the author if you want to search for it there.
