'06 MREA was great!

I made the '06 MREA, and for an average person looking to get exposure to general principles of sustainability, technologies for home efficiencies, and the like, it's a good start. If you're already well read on the subjects, it might not be worth it. I can't quite understand folks who find enough n...

There's no preference for me; I've turbo 1.6's, na 1.6's, 1.5 na's... rabbits, quantums, golfs, vanagons... If you can't get a quantum that's in good shape, it might be easier to go with the rabbit/golf platform in the long run, simply by virtue of it's more readily available (unrelated to biodiesel...

props to girl mark's work, operation, etc

She's been heavily involved in the independent "appleseed" biodiesel processor work, and helped greatly in the organizing of the national biodiesel co-op gathering the summer before last (I was in Germany this summer, so there may well have been a repeat this year, too). I just wanted to a...

The main issues I have is with those subframe bushes. When weak makes the subframe twist as if a spring is weak. This is my gut feeling as well, assuming the car hasn't been slammed into a curb etc. Sometimes when the bushings go, the car will pull to the side more/less when accelerating vs engine ...

Nuts. My dumb neighbors dropped a tree on my quantum sedan whilst I was overseas... and they moved! It's going to make for lots of fun courtroom time. I need a passenger's side quarter panel (blue, ideally), with the black plastic chrome-topped trim piece. Oh, and the passenger's side front power wi...

TDI beetle timing belt how-to?

I see that Jack's also got some specialty tools; which ones are necessary for the TDI timing belt (and tensioner, and pullies, etc) replacement?

Is the procedure outlined anywhere online?

It's later than the earlier style that used just the 1.6 tooling.

Oops, I thought you were suggesting an engine swap!

I'll search for any past posts you've made about the switcheroo.

I too looked high and low to find one; many places tried to sell me an '83 tank, which is plentiful, evidentally. I called places all over the country, including wrecking yards, to try to find mine. I did eventually find one; this was over a year ago. Because this place isn't likely to compete AT AL...

I lubricated with white lithium grease. And I'd remove the entire starter, not bothering to try to address the solenoid by itself when the starter is installed in the diesel van.

Not '83, but '82

I've not any info specific to the '83, but I'm quite certain that it's starter is mounted in the exact same location, with the same sorts of things going on around it, as on the '82. The only pointer that I'd give is to, when you remove it, do so from under the vehicle, reaching around the transmiss...

Built a Battery?

Hmmm. So you've built a battery, according to your expert research? That's good to know. To clarify, your pals have told you that utilizing these copper pipes is not a good idea in the coolant system, yes? That makes me wonder, what metal are the coolant tubes which are already installed in these ve...

Better to use kerosene

I must say, you'd be far better off running kerosene as a stop-gap fuel. Kerosene is sold in many of the same types of stores, and is cheaper. Best is to of course pack a gallon of fuel in your trunk in a small canister. I've a one-gallon red plastic tank. Every few months when I fill up, I'll pour ...
