Re: Engine swap

The 1.5s frequently have cracks in the block when this symptom is evidenced; I agree, the way to go is to a 1.6, 1.6TD, or 1.6ecodiesel, depending on availability and price.

Re: Pump not pumping?

Are you clear on the understanding of the dial preload?

Maybe make a video for us, and there's something just simple that we're missing.

Re: '84 Quantum Shift Linkage bushing parts?

I gave up and ordered the linkage parts; it came with 5 rubbery transparentish pieces. That included two of a part labeled Audi 811711597, and either one would be a perfect fit for the round hole in my photo... problem would be, it should be the smaller different similarly shaped bushing that fits t...

Re: oil pump drive gear

That's a bummer. Did you fully pull the engine then and replace the two bearings for the IM shaft? (Another nice thing about Quantums is that you can do both with the engine in the car.) Fatmobile and others, this new green seal of which you speak; do you mean it fits inside the geared end of the va...

'84 Quantum Shift Linkage bushing parts?

I wonder if anybody has ever had to fix a shift linkage on a quantum. My '84 TD let go, and I'm looking to clarify that I'd be getting the proper parts to fix it if I order a shift bushing kit. I stuck photos up here showing what I mean: http://tinyurl.com/quantumshift Any assurance or insights you ...

Re: Black smoke under load

It sounds like perhaps an "off a tooth" issue with the timing belt. That would be the next thing to try, I'd speculate. Release the timing belt tensioner, then follow the timing procedures, this time being sure that you've got the gear for the pump moved over a tooth's worth on the belt. S...

Re: A/C Golf; how to remove crank/waterpump/compressor belt?

The smaller belt was a tight retrofit for the alternator, but it squeezed on there! Ended up putting the cooling fins awfully close to my fuel supply line, so I shortened it, and changed the approach angle via the banjo bolt on the pump. I'm into keeping belts as loose as possible for longevity, but...

Re: A/C Golf; how to remove crank/waterpump/compressor belt?

Will the crank pulley come off? I got those 4 allen bolts off, but then the pulley seems to be also held on with the main central bolt. This is on an '85 NA Golf. It sure doesn't look like it will come off! Should I give it a few more deadblow hammer smashes and hope I'm wrong? I spent yesterday sma...

thanks, Tyler!

I'm going to Home Depot to buy an 8mm allen driver socket for my 3/8" ratchet now.

Re: A/C Golf; how to remove crank/waterpump/compressor belt?

Well f me but if the crank pulley isn't locked down and removing the four 6mm allen wrench bolts doesn't get me there. I made a crank bolt tool for my Quantum when I changed the front main seal; I'll see if that can work for the damned Golf, but I don't know that I'll have quite the musclepower to l...

A/C Golf; how to remove crank/waterpump/compressor belt?

The alternator belt broke. I got a 3VX265 to install, which looks like it's a useable size. I had figured that removing the waterpump pulley was how the belt which runs from the crank to the waterpump to the A/C compressor was tensioned, but I see now that that is not the case. I need to remove this...

Re: '85 NA Golf dial gauge timing. Hold my hand, friends.

I am recalling the hand-cranking of the 1.6TDs during timing belt changes and two pump reinstalls on Quantums over the years; it would take a good deal of effort to crank past those tough squeezes in the compression cycle, and I could hear the hiss as the valve would open and allow the gasses out......

Thanks a lot, guys!

I'll plug it in, get it running, give it the hillbilly tuning treatment, and break the bad news to the owner.

Re: '85 NA Golf dial gauge timing. Hold my hand, friends.

Thanks, Tyler! Can lousy compression still pull down insanely high smileage, though? I've always assumed that it cannot. So I used a carpentry pencil to mark the teeth and pulley locations on the camshaft and the injection pump. I loosened the timing belt tensioner, took it mostly off, and eased the...

Re: '85 NA Golf dial gauge timing. Hold my hand, friends.

I've hillbilly fine-tuned Quantums before with great success; I thought I had again with this Golf as my highway mileage back from KY was over 57mpg(though perhaps the speedometer cable needs lubing or replacing as it reads about 10 mph low at highway speeds). But now as the cold has re-descended he...
