Re: '85 NA Golf dial gauge timing. Hold my hand, friends.
Are you sure you are looking at the TDC mark? I guess that's what you are questioning. The TDC mark may look like the on in the pic in this link: http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=12090&p=85046&hilit=dimple#p85046 I also identified a way to find TDC from outside the ...

Re: Need advice
You can use a tire size converter program to see what your RPM's will change.
https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc
I did a conversion from 165/70/13 to 195/70/13 and the difference is 7%. You run your own calcs to see what it may do for your RPM's.

you may have to slip the timing belt a tooth on the injector pump to get more adjustment out of it. That's a fairly common issue when doing timing belts.

That's good you got it. Sometimes it takes the easiest work to get the sprocket off, but after you've pounded and pounded on something trying to get it off.

Re: Need advice
Here's a link to the codes:
http://www.spiretech.net/~vw6spd/tech.html
Your AGS trans has a .75 final drive ratio. The next and only lower transmission ratio is one that has a .71 final drive. IMO, not worth it to change out the trans just for this small RPM change. Easier with a tire change.

Re: High Idle Mystery
Does it only happen in 2nd gear or when going to any gear and when does it go away (if it does)? Have you checked for loose bolts and did the problem come on suddenly?

Re: Need advice
You can look at the underside of your trans and get the code from the housing and google the code and find out what the gears are inside the transmission to know if there's another transmission that you could install to give lower RPM's. Sometimes though, your trans will have the gears in it that al...

Re: Need advice
Without changing the gears in the transmission, there are two options:
- drive slower
- install larger diameter tires

Re: Pump not pumping?
There's a couple unanswered suggestions. Have you tried plugging in the block heater and trying to start the engine with a hot engine? The next question would be checking for working glow plugs. Your assumption is that they are working, because they are somewhat new. If you haven't verified this, it...

Re: Pump not pumping?
The mark on the pully should by on the pump side of the pully, and the mark that you align this up with is on the hard steel brackets that the pump bolts to. It shouldn't be lining up with a mark on a tin cover. I'm not sure what you are doing here. Can you post some pics? There's pictures on the fo...

Re: Pump not pumping?
Yea, I'd check base timing again and see if the timing marks line up as air cooled mentioned. If your pump sprocket only has one hole in it, then it's not on backwards, but the cam could be if #1 lobes aren't pointing up. If the sprocket has two holes in it, then it could be 180 out, but if the timi...

Re: Pump not pumping?
Usually, if you are getting whitish smoke from the tailpipe, your timing is off. Pump could be out 180 degrees, or the pump just plane out retarded. I would advance the timing by rotating the pump towards the engine and see what happens. It only takes a few degrees out and they are buggers to start....

Re: charging
This is likely normal. If you keep adding load to a system, the voltage typically will drop a bit. If you ever notice when you flick your AC on at night and the lights dim, it's because of the voltage drop.

Re: Trying to convince my Wife that my Rabbit would make a great 1st car for our Son...
I believe that this is a question that can only be answered by the parties involved. Some kids would never be caught dead in a Rabbit, or even some new car for that fact, then some couldn't care less. Some wouldn't be caught dead in anything but a truck, and then some flat out don't want anything mo...
