Re: 81 Rabbit #3 line issue

The conical device has been missing now from ole 82 for a while. I used a bolt and nut and have been running it this way for about 5 years without any problems.

Re: WTB license plate braket Mk2 Jetta

There's no plastic, at least not on my 86's. That's why they've rusted all the way off.

I did bend some sheet metal and sort of came up with a fix. I'm not going to be using this car anymore, so when I sell it, it'll be the next guy's to deal with.

Re: Pump not pumping?

Yea, a 1, 2 or 3 notch head gasket isn't going to solve that much of a compression issue.

Please report what was wrong with the head when you get the results.

Re: Timing Belt Tracking

As others have commented, a lot of this is likely coming from the IP installation. Contrary to common thought of why a belt tracks to one side, a belt will want to "climb" up the side of a pully, if the pully and belt aren't square to each other. Since your belt is riding towards the passe...

Re: Fuel pump going down???

To know more of what's happening inside the filter, you'd need to either cut it open, or use one of those cheap $2 clear in-line filters before the main filter and see what shows up in that. That will give you a little idea on what may be in the tank.

Re: 81 Diesel P/u uses 1 pint of fuel in under a minute

I discovered the same things as you when I accidentially put gas in my diesel tank. I rigged up a 2.5 gallon jug of diesel and got the IP purged of gasoline, and then was going to run the car to the house to siphon the gas/diesel mixture out of the tank. It was a 10 mile trip, and I got 7 miles befo...

FS: 2 86 Jetta's

I am looking to sell my two 1986 Jetta’s as described below. Asking $800 for the pair. Cars are located in Green Bay, WI Blue 86 Jetta 2 door: This car is diesel, 5 speed, non AC car and hasn’t been run for approximately 5 years. It is heavily rusted and was used by me for about 5 winters as my wint...

Re: Pump not pumping?

Preload on the guage means that you can't set the gauge to zero, screw it in, and then try to time the IP to the factory setting range. By doing this, there will always be some "space" between the end of the gauge and the cam plate inside the IP. The point is that you don't know how much a...

Re: Fuel Leak Question

I do the same thing that tylerdurden does for tightening the hard lines down. Make sure the line is seated properly, then screw the nut down. If you have access to an air compressor (or possibly a can of compressed air??), you can blow off the injector while the car is running and look for the first...

Re: 79 VW Rabbit

Welcome to the forum and world of VW diesels. The best bang for your buck is to buy a Bentley repair manual. The work you do on your own car will save you lots if you have one of these manuals around. In this book it will tell you just about everything you need to know to service one of these cars.

Re: Pump not pumping?

If you're not getting any fuel out of the injector lines (and you're 100% certain the fuel solenoid is working or removed the plunger and spring), then there's a problem with the fuel delivery to the injector pump, or something wrong with the injector pump. Since you don't know anything about the pu...

Re: Pump not pumping?

Do you know anything about the injector pump you are trying to use? You may have installed one where the vanes are stuck or that's just worn out. Did the engine crank over faster before you put this pump on the car? I would also suggest not doing a compression check at this point. If you're not gett...

Re: Pump not pumping?

I went back and re-read this post, or your posts and skimmed the others. See if I got this right. Recenly rebuilt engine, but it ran fine until you rebuilt your IP. All problems started with cranking speed and starting issues after the IP rebuild, correct? I think that's where we're at. Before you p...

Re: 81 Diesel Rabbit

Welcome to the forum. What is a gravity valve? I think you need to start to look at various systems and rule them out of the starting issue or keep them in the starting issue, depending on the results of your tests. For example, if you have a working block heater system, plugging that in for (say) 4...
