Reducing the volume of lower frequencies requires more mass. From my experience (I had a slushbox) the noise of the engine only really became a problem at high engine speeds and the frequencies of concern were not too low. I have only heard of requiring heavy insulation for really low frequencies. I...

If you test your injectors per the last post just be aware that diesel injectors operate at extremely high pressures. These pressures are high enough to inject poisonous diesel rather deep in living tissue. Quick stat off the web: if the pressure is over 2000 psi amputation rate for fingers is great...

Car is in immaculate shape other than the belts being loose and the clutch not disengaging, dash lights not working and fan being stuck on all the time.
With that description alone we all know it must be a Mk II Volkswagen.

What about volumetric efficiency? Flow characteristics in intake will change pretty significantly with piston speed (RPM) (I would guestimate 20-30%) resulting in changes in mass of air. However, ignoring volumetric efficiency is probably pretty reasonable. Especially if you only consider a narrow v...

Unfortunately, $140 is a very inexpensive repair these days. What is the connection between the thermostat repair and the power steering? The power steering is somewhat in the way but putting it back on is pretty well as easy as taking it off. I just hated those v-belts. For the first couple of year...

I had power steering until the belt came off. I never put another one back on. I am not a big guy and I never had any issues. I also had snow tires on the front all year and a big ding in one of the rims that meant I had to keep inflating the tire every couple of weeks. With normal sized, properly i...

Stock TD did have the oil sprayers but they can be retrofitted or not used at all. If getting the turbo and doing the work to install is no big deal I would go for it. A small, low boost turbo is just going to get you back some of the waste heat out the exhaust. You lose a little to spool the turbo ...

Would the force needed to pull the cold start lever be indicative of an internal pressure in the pump? A small fish scale could be used to quantify that force. I wonder how repeatable those measurements would be.

I have heard: straight vegetable oils have a lower cetane number than any diesel. However, biodiesel has a higher cetane number. Supposedly cetane number for diesel at the pump has been going down over the past few years. Biodiesels have alcohols in them which means oxygen in the fuel. This is impor...

A few somewhat relevant passages from "Introduction to Internal Combustion Engines" (3rd edition) by Richard Stone. "Typically 20-35 per cent of the fuel energy passes to the engine coolant." (p. 429) "Of the heat flow to the coolant, about half comes from in-cylinder heat t...

I will definitely test the condition that way (take off crankcase hose). It is too bad I dont have a tach, the engine does not sound that different at 80 in 3rd compared to 50 in 2nd. I have only come across this problem at higher speeds. I have already done a little investigating with respect to th...

Moderate runaway?

Lately, if I bring my Jetta over 80 km/h (which is rare since I have a slushbox) it will maintain speed without any accelerator input. My first thoughts were a stuck accelerator pedal/cable or a hanging injector. However, just the other day the low oil pressure light flickered at idle and sure enoug...

I have been in a position lately where I have been unable to spend a dime unless absolutely necessary. The jetta is running but it has been interesting. As I drove home from school today the power steering gave out (either the belt is gone or is very loose) and water was trickling down on to me from...
