If you're worried about it, use an oil pan heater instead. It warms everything from the oil up-and warm oil flows. One like this:

Thank your mechanic, and continue using the block heater. It won't hurt a thing.

Free to a good home...
I sold a butt load of stuff here a couple years ago, and have since moved. Still haven't found a replacement bunny, so I'm unloading the rest. Still have: 1.5 Pump, from a running car ten years ago. Various other parts, like the jack, HD engine mount, etc. All free for the price of shipping, except ...

Spare parts for my '83
Selling some of my extra VW parts. All of them fit a 1983, all prices are without shipping. "Core" injection pump, It hasn't been on a car in years, but bet it'll work, no promises, $25 Coolant tank $10 HD passenger side motor mount from that other company, very light surface rust on it (I...

New head gasket- update.
After weighing the merits of fixing vs. junking the '83, I've decided to throw it away. To a degree I hate to do it, but it just doesn't work for me economically. In addition to needing a new head and attendant parts to install it, it also is in need of a windshield that I cannot source locally. I'l...

Re: Time for a head gasket
The block is straight. There's a mark in #2 that looked like a crack yesterday, but after filling the block with water last night and finding no leaks, and inspecting it with magnification this morning, I'm a little less ready to dump the car. Piston protrusion is .813mm. Here's the head crack pics:...

Re: Time for a head gasket
Well, It's time for more than a head gasket. I scrubbed the head last night and it's got a big crack between the valve and the prechamber insert, and it's also warped more than .004. I'm thinking it's junk. I'm tempted to buy a reman head from Jack, but I have no core, so it might be just as well to...

Re: Offroad Rabbit
I added two or three inches of lift to my 83 by installing springs and spring hats from a 85-92. It's a direct swap in, and it's REALLY easy. I waited until I put struts on the front, though.
The rear is lifted the same way, although TD's dirt cheap method is just as good.

Re: Time for a head gasket
Yup, the new coolant tank is in the works.
So the "notched" gasket is the right one? Why the blazes would my mill have a gasket with holes?
What part number do I need for ARP studs? I'm not very excited about listening to the racket the TTY bolts make. Taking them out was bad enough...

Time for a head gasket
I finally killed my 83. Radiator split on the side and dumped all the coolant, and the engine got pretty hot, and coolant leaks into #2. I have a mechanical head (oil drain boss between 2 and 3 only), but I have a 3 hole gasket, part # 068103383AG and 12 mm head bolts-i measured with an end wrench- ...

Re: Front end alignment question
You can get your alignment very close to where it needs to be using a level floor, a carpenter's square, and a tape measure. Re: helicoiling the t/b tensioner, need sizing help
Was it timesets that are a bit longer than helicoils? The tensioner is important, helicoils might not be long enough, have enough threads. Yes. In addition to being longer than a helicoil, they are much more likely to stay IN the part they're installed in. I'd recommend a Timesert over a Helicoil, ...

Re: paraffin and other potions..
I'm using a pound of Gulf canning paraffin to ten gallons of diesel in the warm months, and two stroke oil from the HazMat facility at the landfill (free) in the winter.
The engine is noticeably quieter on the paraffin, but I can't tell any difference on the two stroke oil.

Re: replacement struts and springs.
I'd pass them by and save up for KYB's. I put a couple sets of Monroe shocks on various vehicles, and while they work pretty good for a while, they don't tend to last as long as KYB's or Bilsteins. Sachs lower end shocks and inserts are in the same class, AFAIC. The sad thing is that I spent the sam...
