I had a 79 rabbit with an automatic
Not diesel but it is a good tranny. Only drawback was that it was a power eater as mentioned previously. I drove the daylights out of it and eventually paired it with a high horse power engine and it still drove with no complaints. It is very heavy though so when lowering it to do anything be wary a...

leaking things
I noticed a slow drop in MPG but I needed a head gasket so I went and replaced the gasket and fuel lines but after the rebuild I still noticed a drop in MPG. I was disappointed in that. I wasn't until I had to fill it with diesel over b99 that I noticed the smell of diesel around the car. Ends up my...

Oh I guess if anyone knows a source in Tucson Arizona, that would be spiffy.

Short question
I have the leaky IP head o ring thing going on right now. What is the size of o-ring that I need? I haven't been able to find a reference to it at all. I am running B99 so I need to get that special material one too right? Should I get a full IP gasket set or just the head O ring? Are there somethin...

Final words
Well did the AC conversion. Fairly straight forward. Needed to remove and clean out all the main hoses. Replaced all the bushings and refilled the condenser, evaporator, compressor and hoses with PAG oil and followed these general instructions here: Service Brief Worked well but I found that my leak...

Update
Thanks for all your help. The woodruff key was the missing, well, key to this problem. Once installed the car started right up and after setting the IP timing I ran it through emission with perfect results of 0% opacity. I now have to fix the return fuel hoses as they all seem to be leaking at the i...

Hooray
I think that this is the final piece of the puzzle (hopefully). thanks for the information everyone. I will see if I can find that piece around my garage, in the engine bay etc. Or will source one from somewhere. You think I could get it from the VW dealer if I can't find it? Update: J...

Ok some clarification
Seems that i have lost the key for the IP timing gear. Never realized there was one in there and so I never noticed that i lost it. The question is where can I get one if I can't find it around the vehicle? Could someone post a picture of one or point me to a picture of one I have no idea what to lo...

I guess my terminology is creating a miscommunication
Yes I never took apart the IP and by cam I mean gear/cog for the timing belt to run on. The IP actuates the dial indicator when I turn the engine at the crank but when I rotate the IP to adjust the timing the dial indicator doesn't move. That is when I loosen the bolts that hold the IP to the motor ...

Ok
Unfortunately I have done all of that. Initially I marked the tab (the one right before TDC that sticks out) on the flywheel with paint thinking that that was the TDC mark not realizing that it was the notch a little further counterclockwise. Anyway then I lined up all the things as stated in your r...

Follow up
So I checked all that I could check without removing the head and could not get it to start. I have fuel coming to all injectors. the timing is lined up correctly with respect to the crank and the cam. the shut off solenoid works correctly. I reset the timing on the IP but could not get it to read c...

Thanks for all the input. I did a little test on an injector hose into a bottle to see if t was receiving fuel and some came out but I guess in hindsight I am not sure how much should come out or at what force it should come out. Should it just drip or should it be under more pressure? Any advice he...

Need some help....
I have a '92 NA Jetta (running 99bio) that needed a head gasket replaced. Got it all done and was advised to do the water pump at the same time so got one of those and after much tinkering realized that I need to remove the injection pump from the engine due to the AC bracket. Long story short I hav...
