Re: TD exhaust stress crack

Ok. 4 years later. I ended up cutting out that shorty flex joint and putting in a 6" flex in its place. I didn't have access to welding gear so I clamped it in and it seemed good until yesterday while I was under the van I saw a crack on that first 180 bend. I'm going to weld it up for now but ...

Re: Cold Start Lever

I couldn't find a long enough one, although there must be a n/a diesel one available from the dealer or otherwise. I got a volvo push/pull from my VW guy. Long enough to mount just under the lip of the rear seat, through the firewall and into the engine compartment. Once I'm warmed up, I ask a rear ...

Re: Mysterious missing

Well it's been a while and Westy and I have been through many adventures and this summer all the pieces of my "mysterious missing" fell into place. The problem was: I would start the van, warm it up and drive off. Randomly, the van would misfire and stall, always almost immediately. Then w...

Re: Mysterious missing

The shaft turned out to be fine. I had the pump resealed by Giles and everything else fell into place. I'm looking toward putting a 1.9 head on the block next.

Re: Good Boost gauge

So to answer my own question, the boost gauge I need is the vdo vision series, p/n 150-104. This is a backlit gauge whereas the other one I had, shown in the pic is side light. I'm gonna order the right one now.

Good Boost gauge

I installed a bunch of gauges in a centre console I built to monitor the engine while I turn up the fuelling. Three of them came from a golf caddy, late 80's or early 90's. They are VDO gauges that work really well. The EGT from Westach is also excellent. My issue is with the lighting of the VDO boo...

Re: Newbie to the Van!

If you can't advance the pump enough without hitting against the injector hard lines, it's possible the belt may be off by one tooth.

Re: aaz swap in vanagon coolant hose question

I think your 82 diesel hoses will work. When I put a 1.6 TD in my gasser van, I got some hoses from a German TD and made up a few from pieces I found at a local parts store. The AAZ in my shed looks like a direct swap for the MF. I have even cannibalised it for coolant ports to replace the ones that...

leaky cam cover

My 1.6TD is mounted at the stock 55degs. The cam cover leaks oil making a mess wherever I go. I've replaced the cork and rubber gaskets with the one piece rubber one but the oil continues to drip out. Can anyone help me?

Thats a really nice install wildenbeast. I wish I had seen that before i started. You are mounted really solidly before the flex joint. I'll see if I can get mine shored up similar to that. I'm in too deep to modify mine to come down first like yours but i can probably find somewhere to mount to.

Here's some pics, a year later. The exhaust has been reworked and while not fixed, it seems to be failing slower. Aaaarrrgh!

Good point Fatmobile. I'm about to put her away for the winter. I'll have a good look at that shaft when I pull the IP to reseal the cold-start lever. And I just did the pump head seal last fall "in-situ." Great how-to libbybapa.
But will the leaks never end?

Here's my update, a year later: I replaced the oil pump, and it cured the problem! Oh happy day. Then I put the van away for the winter. In the spring, i went on a road trip and the van started pouring white smoke and running like it was choking on the same. I pulled the belt cover off and found the...

You are absolutely right that the pickup tube with the control valve is the likely culprit and I will get to it soon.
My reasoning for the oil pressure rising is that as the engine wears into the new bearings, the parts would get closer and the oil would have less room to escape.

I got all my diesel parts shipped in a crate from California about 4 years ago. From one of those places that imports used parts from Germany. I don't what year or application the pump came from. What years did they make the TD in Europe? Was the NA an option as well? Does it make sense that it woul...
