The only problem I had was like you mentioned,.. the timing mark is missing.
I painted one on.
Yeah, I was afraid that was the answer. So how did you determine the correct location? And are there any useful marks at all?

210 mm Flywheel & Clutch on a 1.6?

Hi all. So I'm installing a DFQ code transaxle from a '96(?) Jetta, with the fat input shaft in my '82 Rabbit. As I understand it, I need to upgrade the clutch disk from my current 200 mm setup to a 210 mm to accommodate the 24mm 28 spline input shaft. That also means the pressure plate and flywheel...

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?

Thanks for all your replies. I ended up pulling off the drum just far enough to get a punch on the top of the wedge and tapping it down. I had previously used a die grinder on the inboard edge of the drum to take off the wear step so the shoes would slide on smoothly. Also X2 on using a pressure ble...

Re: What's Wrong With My Brakes?

Is the adjusting wedge installed backwards where the little tab is pressing against the brake mechanism? I've has that very issue and the rear brakes never adjusted as they should have. Hmm, I'll have to take look. As I recall, I didn't disturb the orientation of the parts, but it's possible. Are y...

What's Wrong With My Brakes?

So it started when I got a leak in my left rear wheel cylinder last week. The cold weather and perhaps 6 years service probably had something to do with it, but one morning the brake pedal went to the floor. A quick inspection found the wet wheel, that was verified by pulling the drum -- it was the ...

Re: Getting a '90 Jetta running better

I'm a little late to the party, but RE: the oil leak, I had a similar situation here: http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11353 It killed me that it was running well to have to change the head gasket, but there you have it. Plus I was losing almost a quart of oil every tankful...

Re: Leaking oil, need some assistance

I found the pan bolts close to the flywheel difficult to put back in with a ratchet, because it's not really a straight shot. I had better luck by cutting a screwdriver slot on the head of the bolts to get those few started.

Tuning Tips for Turbos?

So after much procrastination, I finally got around to installing the turbo setup to my 1.6 NA in my '82 Rabbit. It's got the K24 unit, originally from a '85 or '86 Jetta, though I received it in a '92 Jetta. Though I have the complete turbo motor(overheated-- bad water pump), I elected to install t...

Re: 1980 Rabbit Electrical Woes

Just thought I'd mention that because of the leaky windshields, not only do the fuseboxes get wet and corrode, but the relays themsleves fill up with water. There is really no path for the relays to "drain", though I thought of drilling holes in the covers. So, you might consider (after no...

Re: No Start

You might check to see you have the proper conical nut on that bolt by the high pressure end. Usually that taper will help center it in the bracket hole. Actually, I see that I used that line before: http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=10830&p=74506&hilit=+conical+nut#...

Re: Head gasket external oil leak

I replaced the HG solely for that reason: http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11353 It made quite a mess, I had to travel with a piece of cardboard for my parking spot, which I had to replace often as I was losing most of a quart per tankful (~ 500 miles). I finally gave in an...

Re: Is this IP leak from the top seal? 83 td

The Bosch DGK 126 does not come with the front seal, 1 460 283 312. To be sure, you can write down (or take a picture of) the numbers of the pump for the local Bosch center to look-up. If you're game to pull apart the pump, you can look at this if you haven't done so already: http://www.vwdieselpart...

I went with the 204-4203 on the recommendation of ARP. You can find some discussion here: http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=8312&start=15 I lubed the top threads with their "special sauce" that was supplied with the kit. When I had to pull the head to address t...

Re: shifting issues

It seems that your clutch is not disengaging completely. With the engine off, and in gear, if you step on the clutch, can you roll your car? It might be a matter of the clutch cable needing adjustment. Or it could be a sign of imminent cable failure. As strands break, the cable stretches, changing t...

There's a lot of info at http://brokevw.com/ which might answer some of your questions. And you could pose your questions to Brian: he seems to be well versed on the intricacies of the 020 transaxles.
