I have not checked cylinder specs yet or pistons, next on my list. I agree on the bearings. Oddly enough, all the crank and rod bearings have been well within new specs (.002-.0025). So I thought I would re-use them.

Thank you for the info guys. I will get them weighed and see where things stand. Just to clarify... If I matchup the pistons and rods, I will be okay as long as I keep the pistons with their cylinder and the rod bearings with their correct crankshaft journal. I had a broken ring in number 3. I am gu...

I measured the piston cleaeance on the highest piston to be .07. But I got my old head gasket cleaned up and it is a 3 notch. Any advice? I assume it would be best to go with a one notch unless there is some other reason they would have put a 3 notch in there. TO my knowledge, VW did the last rebuild.

Thank you fellows for the input. The engine has been sitting for 15 years. Though I did own it and drive it before it sat and it ran well, I am concerned about it sitting for that long. Also I don't exactly know all the history of the car. So I think re-ringing is probably a good idea and I am conce...

Thank you for the piston info guys. I will get them cleaned up, weighed, and let you know what I find out. In some of Hagars writings he mentioned to never boil the block in caustic because it would either weaken the special metal cast alloy the block is made from or eat off some interior coating. N...

Quite interesting fellows, thank you for the info. Did not realize they compensated for vanagon engines in that manner. Quite ingenious. Thanks for the info Andrew. RSXSR thank you for your suggestions for checking the head. I just have the bottom end to pull out and check over and then get the rest...

I appreciate your input. Sorry... it was late and I really was not making sense. I did not know they controlled flow that way. I have overhauled a lot of engines in my life but never seen that before. I will be curious to see the new gasket. I planned to pull the pan anyway so I will give it a good ...

Scratching head over head gasket?

Well... I think I have seen something new to me. I pulled the head off my 1.6 n/a and the head gasket looked rather odd. In several of the places where there should be cooling channels from the block to the head through the gasket (the triangular holes) there never was any triangular holes. Instead,...

Thread about head rebuilding?

I have been looking about a thread for head rebuilding and I have not found anything specific to that. Just bits and pieces. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I don't know anyone who has tried HHO technology on a VW yet... I have a neighbor who made one of those double jar units and has it in a 3/4 ton V8 dodge pickup. He is getting a 7mpg increase. He is a long time mechanic and we are good friends so I know he would be honest with me, good or bad. I thi...

I am not exactly sure... Generally with plastics there is a circle sort of stamp with writing and possibly a code in the center. Might about have to take a picture of it. Maybe everyone thinks I am nuts, but I have watched biodiesel and soybean oil eat through plastic containers in less than 3 month...

Fuel tank swap needed for conversions?

I am doing a gas to diesel conversion with a 91 golf. I have a lot [/u][/u]of experience with biodiesel research and to my knowledge and experience, the only plastic that will not degrade over time is a florinated plastic. So I am not sure of the composition of the fuel tank, does anyone happen to k...

Thank you both for the input. I agree with using the old engine and rebuilding the new one for later. I will check the intermediate shaft bearings as soon as someone tells me what this refers too. I am planning to put new o rings and main seal in the injection pump, get the injectors checked, probab...
