Re: engine troubleshooting

The thread will be an M10 I believe. A common 3/8" NPT fitting will more or less thread in there but start to bind after a while. It WILL seal though. Just remember the head is aluminum, so excessive tightening force will result in a hole that will now only accept 3/8" NPT. While we are he...

Re: bezerk injection pump

Definitely not delivery valves - they don't come in to play in this case. The collar is the only part of the pump that has any control over fuel volume, or any ability to "stick" and cause something like this. If you have a vacuum pump (or a pressure pump capable of pushing fuel for that m...

Re: Glow Plug Re-Wiring

I just got a 1989 jetta with a NA 1.6. It was having slow cold starts. My stock glow plug system wasn't getting any juice for some reason and I like a push button anyway. So I ran a push button setup to a self grounding ford-type solenoid (77 wagoneer since that was what I have around). I did not u...

Re: replacing 2nd gear synchro

Anyone done it? How difficult is it, any specialty tools needed? What seals or other parts should be replaced? Not really a "do it yourself" project - there are a lot of very very specific things that need to be set up if you have the transmission apart in terms of preload, clearances, et...

Re: new timing belt little issue.

For what it's worth, I got to check my buddy's Vanagon pump with the dial gauge and compare the difference between the cold start lever pulled and the cold start lever stowed. It knocks the timing out by about 0.30mm. We found out by setting the timing with the CS pulled by accident. Ran like p00p....

Re: Fuel Price Spread-- RUG to Diesel

Weird... So it's cheap in Mexico, and it's mostly cheaper in Canada, but expensive in the US compared to gasoline? CAD / USD conversion time... Today I saw diesel at $1.379/L in Vancouver. It's expensive right now as it's winter diesel and it's heating oil season. We also have probably the most expe...

Re: Fuel Price Spread-- RUG to Diesel

The funny thing is up here in Canada, the price of ULSD is often cheaper than RUG. It doesn't fluctuate as much so once in a while RUG will dip lower for a short while, but generally speaking they're either the same or diesel is slightly less. Often only 2-5% less, but still.... There's a few truck ...

Re: Newbie seeks advice on potential 91 Jetta Diesel purchas

Price is fine assuming it is in decent condition. They pop up for about $1000-1500 in the BC area somewhat often, though at that price it's usually a not-so-nice paint color. At $1K there's not really much that you can say one way or the other - a running drive-able VW diesel will sell for $1k minim...

Re: head use??

I'm just helping a buddy go through the whole process of getting an 11mm head on a 12mm block. I don't believe there is any difference with the oil drain - if there is I certainly didn't notice. It appears to be the same. There definitely IS a difference between the hydraulic and the mech heads, but...

Re: losing water mystery

I just had to do one of the plastic flanges on Jezzie too. The leak was practically invisible except I was noticing I had to add a touch of coolant once in a while. In the end it really let go, but even then you couldn't see the crack unless you looked REALLY closely, and even then only after I'd re...

Re: cold start lever...

Probably well worth checking your pump's internal pressure. If you're noticing a difference in power / smoothness much above idle it is a good sign that the pump's advance mechanism isn't working properly anymore. You can partially compensate by advancing the pump a bit but if the pump's pressure is...

Re: 1.6D Golf (Rabbit) White Smoke

You will probably want to replace the throttle shaft bushing as well as the o-ring, given that you have movement in the shaft that shouldn't be there. I believe the new bushings need to be reamed to fit.

Re: 1.6L head repair

Repairable? If you know someone who's really good at welding aluminum anything is possible. The material would have to be built back up and then the head decked back to flat again. Given the overall condition of the surface it will definitely take a lot of work, which means a lot of $$$$. I doubt it...
