Re: Speedometer / Odometer Discrepancy

Might want to check the speedo drive gear, it may not be the correct match for the final drive in the transaxle: - http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/VW_020_transmission.shtml#Speedometer The above codes/colors should be good for the 5-speeds but one would assume the same ratio/tooth relationship works ...

Re: Vacuum Pump Problem

Im having trouble with my 85 Quantum GL. It has about 10K on a rebuilt stock TD and runs like a top but I'm losing the diaphram in the vaccum pump on a regular basis. The most recent one only lasted 1500 miles. What's going on? Am I doing something wrong? Is it the brand of replacement diaphram I'm...

Re: Loud popping from transmission or CV joint?

When my '82 made that sort of noise, it took some time to diagnose. First, was able to reproduce the noise with the front end on jack stands. Then was able to confirm it was a once per wheel revolution noise, so it did not matter what gear it was in. Then removed one then the other CV axle and could...

Re: Weak or Dim Headlights

Anybody got a breakdown on the colors for ground high and low headlight power wiring? Connector pin-out listed below: - http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Headlights.shtml#HarnessTypes Common will be hooked to a ground wire on the VW headlight, look for a short ground pig tail wire attached to...

Re: Weak or Dim Headlights

What would cause my headlights to be so dim? I actually have to get out of the car to see if they are on. Very weak headlights and tail lights. Waiting to get pulled over by a cop but have been lucky enough not to be driving atb night. Check the voltage at he back of the headlight socket and see wh...

x3 on the linkage adjustment/check. Some tips below on what to look for: - http://www.4crawler.com/Diesel/ForSale/ShiftLinkageInstall.shtml#DiagnosingProblems Could be it is either not pushing all the way into reverse, or you might also have something like a worn or broken motor mount that is lettin...

Re: heater in my dasher stinks

I have a couple of questions about the heat in my dasher. First the heat only comes out the 2 center vents, the 2 outer vents blow cold air so I close them to make it tolerable. second when sitting the heat output decrases dramaticly. It this how these are set up, or is there something wrong here? ...

Re: intake too loud!!

Not sure if this would work in this application, but I fashioned a cold air intake on my '82 pickup and it quieted the intake noise quite a bit:

Re: Rabbit steering upgrade

Thanks for all the thoughts. Tires: new, small 13x145, inflated properly. Struts: new Strut bearing: ??? don't know. I do have some front end vibration issues to sort out - was suspecting tires - and the steering column is definitely loose. Should look into the strut bearing thing. When I used to r...

Re: losing water mystery

I had a similar issue in my old '81. It would run fine and then every once in a while lose coolant. Turns out it had a very minor leak in the head gasket due to a coolant passage that had eroded and enlarged and got close enough to the top of one cylinder bore to cause a leak but only at high pressu...

Re: what size/type of socket do I use for my 11mm ARP studs?

Yep, I used a 12 point socket for the 12mm ARP studs in my Toyota 4Runner. I think it was something like 14mm or 9/16". I actually purchased a new socket just for use with those nuts, took a nut down to the hardware store and found the best fit on the sockets they had and went with that.

same trouble I had with his kit. Nothing he did, I took the stock arms up and matched the lengths. It was a bit hard to get into first with the lengths matched up to stock pieces. I lengthed the one and haven't made any more adjustments to it. My friend Brenden did the same with his too. Stock piec...

Re: Filling Transmission

http://www.brokevw.com/020oil.html Your method sounds good to me. I usually get it hot, drain, and fill all through the speedo hole. I have a 90w bottle with the bottom cut out and a 3 foot peice of 3/8 hose clamped to the filler of the bottle. I take the fill plug on the side out as I still have t...

Re: Shifter rebuild?

Really, one of the most difficult adjustments on the A1 shift linkage is trying to get 1st to sit right at the left stop edge. A little too far one way and you have to push down and over to get 1st, a little too far the other way and it'll hit the left ridge and you might not get to use 5th. The th...

Re: Shifter rebuild?

It would be nice if VW designed the linkage to allow the nylon rod ends to be easily (screwed off and on) replaced, but there did not, so when they wear out, you need to replace the whole thing. Not a big deal, but when those start to go, your first sign may be that your linkage pops apart on some d...
