Re: Playing the timing game

Well, I figured out the other problem! Lol. Transmission is fine. The drivers side CV joint is broken. So an easy fix! Thanks for the advice everyone!

Re: Playing the timing game

Sooooo, problem solved! I put the throttle on the governor shaft incorrectly. My local diesel guy readjusted it and the engine fired right up! As for your question, fatmobile, I do not have clear lines on the fuel system. But at least it runs! Lol. I have one other problem though that maybe could be...

Re: Playing the timing game

Well, I think first off I'm going to take the pump to my local diesel place and have them bench test it. It's a pump I rebuilt and I need to determine if I put it back together correctly or not. When I spin the pump with a drill, I get some fuel coming out. Not a lot when spinning slow, it just kind...

Re: Playing the timing game

I am getting smoke out of the tail pipe. White smoke when it's just cranking without combustion and then a little bit of darker color smoke when it does combust a few times. Seems like a timing issue that I'm having trouble with because it tries to fire but won't run. The cam, block and pump are all...

Playing the timing game

1985 1.6 n/a diesel Jetta. Nothing fancy. New piston rings, rebuilt injection pump. No air in the fuel system. I'm trying to get it started after all the work I've put in to it. I have all the timing marks lined up. It tries to fire only when the pedal is not depressed. If I floor it then the engine...

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

Strange huh, fatmobile. I might have to just take the pump in to my local diesel place and have them get it back to where it's supposed to be.

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

There's basically, from what I can tell, three different settings for the accelerator arm on the governer shaft and I've tried all positions where the line on the arm lines up with the notch on top of the governer shaft. Sound right?

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

that's kind of what i'm thinking. so i guess my goal here is to get some advice on getting the insides back where they should be. like i said before i've tried all different positions with the fuel screw, idle screw, stop screw as well as the linkage at the pedal, all with no luck.

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

I have had little success timing pumps with a dial gauge. So it's running by me tuning it by ear. Does this sound like a timing issue? Once it's warmed up it sounds good!?

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

So, I Installed a clear line on the outlet banjo bolt. I noticed the super fine misty bubbles in it but they eventually cleared out and I no longer see any bubbles coming from the pump. So that means there is no air in the pump, right? My last resort option is to take the pump to my local diesel rep...

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

Thanks for the info, Greg lousy. I guess I'll have to put clear lines on this thing.

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

Well, based on that, the air should be purged out of the pump. I've addressed all other places that air might be coming in. So I don't think air is the problem. I think the issue stems from me taking the top off to replace the seal. Everything was running fine until I did that.

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

So let's say air is trapped in the IP. How does one go about getting it out of the pump?

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

It's just a pain in the butt to run a line from the pump to the tank. Doesn't it make sense that all air would be pressed and expelled out of the injectors? I don't see how air in the system can stay there. Especially after bleeding each injector just to get the thing to start. It should either be p...

Re: Tuning 1.6 NA pumps?

Well, I fixed the split in the return fuel line, however, I don't believe there is air in this system. This whole problem stems from me replacing the top seal on the pump and I obviously didn't get the top lever back in place correctly. I need someone who is good with tuning these pumps back to norm...
