Re: Front wheel bearings
I've just begun this job. Everything is apart, but I am having difficulty in removing the inner race from the hub - it stayed with the hub when I pressed the hub out of the strut housing. Does anyone have a suggestion how to get the race off the hub without the special VW tool? None of my pullers wi...

Speedometer cable problem
I'm attempting to replace a broken speedo cable on my Dasher. I've unscrewed both ends and removed the cable assembly. The break is right where the cable enters the transmission. There is maybe 1/16" of cable on the broken piece. The broken piece won't come out of the transmission. It is loose ...

You most likely have a poor connection somewhere. I'd measure the voltage at the alternator terminal - from the terminal to the alternator housing. That should be 13.8 - 14.2 volts or thereabouts. If that's OK, then measure from the alternator body to the car body - that value will be the voltage dr...

injector removal problem
I'm removing the injectors from my newly aquired 81 Caddy. I am unable to break the #2 injector free. Searched the forum and found that Hagar uses an impact wrench on stubborn injectors. Others say do not use an impact wrench. I've soaked the injector threads with PB blaster and am letting it sit ov...

It should be fairly easy to replace the throttle shaft seal with the pump on the car. Remove all the hardware from the throttle shaft, carefully noting how it all goes together (pictures are good). Pay particular attention to the orientation of the lever on the shaft. You want to get that back in th...

Thanks, QTD. If I can get this thing apart, I can get the rust off - I use electrolysis and it works really well. The regulators look just fine - it's the channel thats rusty. I will take a closer look to see if I can get to the channel-to-regulator fasteners. Appreciate the advice! Oh, and I agree ...

Dasher window problem
This isn't strictly an engine question but I don't know where else to turn. My 81 Dasher Diesel 4D windows are all frozen in the "up" position. It appears from what I can see that the metal channel along the bottom of the window has rusted badly and is frozen by the rust to the window regu...

Copper Washers
To insure that a copper washer reseals (if you reuse them), anneal them before you put 'em back. Heat them red hot with a torch and then immediately dunk them in water. Softens 'em right up. Aircraft mechanics do this with the copper spark plug washers in aircraft engines every time we remove them t...

The drums are off! Thank you for all the tips. I ended up slacking off the parking brake cable, using a drift and hammering on the inside rim of the drum and wacking on the outside as I worked it off. Things were quite rusty inside. I'm using electrolysis to remove the rust, then will paint and reas...
