You must be a magician. The starter is directly below that hole next to the rear seat, not in the openspace of the engine compartment. The bolts are not visible from the compartment and the starter could not physically be removed through the engine compartment. The hole was cut a year ago. A cover p...

I think he smiled, maybe he laughed behind my back, but later asked if i wanted the kludge parts back. Now that i recall it in more detail I had used a stainless steel band to hold the inner part on the boot nut plate. Nylon ties were used further out just to keep the wind friction from flapping it ...

My starter was anything but accessable and no way could I get a socket wrench on the bolts, let alone manipulate getting the starter out and a new one in. I just don't see how it could be done anyother way than an access hole. My starter was totally under the deck. Here is a link to a picture showin...

Injector fuel line
Thanks. I had tried all the local auto parts including Napa and when i showed them the old small hose I got "no" for an answer. I knew it must be available somewhere.

Starter Replacement in '82 diesel Westfalia
This is a fix that should have been designed into the original VW Vanagons and buses. If you keep one of these vehicles long enough it is going to need a starter/solenoid replacement. No way do I want to try and drop the engine or pay a mechanic and pit expenses to do it. Afterall the annual cost on...

CV boot temporary fix
As the years pass and miles accumulate, the CV boots eventually need replacing. You just don't want dirt, road crud getting into the CV joints otherwise you have a major expense on your hands. I kept a close eye on the boots as the years built up on this '82 vehicle. Surface cracks began to appear. ...

Broken Accelerator Cable
During the first year of ownership of this brand new 1982 diesel Westy the accelerator cable broke at the crimp where it attaches to the pedal linkage. It was a manufacturing defect with too tight of a crimp, and poor design. It broke just as i was accerating up a freeway onramp in San Diego during ...

Injector fuel line - flexible
The original fuel line was a composition of rubber and fabric weave. Over time this deteriorates and cracks and leaks. No local shops carried a small diameter fuel line and I couldn't find any online from the auto suppliers. The diameter has to be small in order to fit on the injector nipple and mak...

Oil Leaking??
I had a similar oil mess on the back of my '82 Diesel Westfalia. It was partly caused by a loose oil dipstick that had a shrunken "O" ring. Strangely oil splashes all the way to the top and out. It was hard to find a replacement "O" ring with the right dimensions so i made a slee...

black exhaust
I have to say the injector replacement had an immediate effect on getting rid of the black exhaust. There might be a "set in" period for rebuilt injectors, because it seemed like over the following year the engine became quieter and ran smoother and had more power. I could get up the Indio...

black smoke
When my 82 Vanagon diesel was new it would pass black exhaust going over highway 80 in the Sierras. Then it cleared up until 20 years later. This time the cause was the injectors. Bought rebuilt injectors, torque wrench and socket and replaced them myself in 2008. Exhaust has been clear since. This ...
