Re: Oil filter woes
Back on the road! A friend stopped out yesterday and started the process alone. Dropped the pan, pulled the pump, and pulled #3 rod cap. Everything looked quite fine, no marring of any surface. Today, used some plasti-gauge to measure the clearance (just to make sure) and were well within the factor...

Oil filter woes
Recently after putting a new vacuum pump in the 82 jetta, a few starts after the install the o-ring on the oil filter blew out and oil sprayed all over, upon start up. A friend suggested running lighter weight oil for the cold weather, 5-30. So I changed the oil and threw on a new meyle filter, tigh...

Diesel, once gelled, what do you do? Just wait for warm weather? Also, glow plugs were definitely drawing this morning based on the volt gauge. But now, this afternoon, when I turn the key I can still hear the relay click but it doesn't appear to be going from the normal 11v (when plugs are on) to t...

7 degree YEAH, 0 NO :(
Yesterday, I started the car at 7 degrees, without even being plugged in, it did take a couple minutes of cycling the plugs, but it did start.
Today, 0 degrees, car plugged in and heater working fine, NO START. It doesn't even catch once, just turns and turns. What could be the culprit?

Black Poof Boom
Doing the normal 20 mile drive into town and back. On the way back, going up "the double hump" hill, I downshifted to 4th, the car lagged for a second and then poof, a huge cloud of black behind me. Now, the car runs the same...if not better, maybe it's in my head. What would do this?

I am going to try to tear the water pump out later today. I haven't put one on it...so, it's probably about time. Also, due to the akk basswords location of the thermostat, I'm just gonna replace about everything, making it an easy one time thing. Thermostat, hoses, water pump, gasket, etc. I'll kee...

Ok, just got done with a 175 mile round trip...up into the black hills, a lot of climbing, etc. I've gone from 38-9mpg to 32. My temp gauge has been pinned at just above the LED, candy thermometer reads 204. This time, I stopped the car to fuel up, tried to open the reservoir and just was pissing fl...

When the car is off and cold, it is soft. Could be a bad headgasket in the preliminary stages. I wish there was someone in the Rapid City area that would let me use their combustion block leak tester, to test for combustion gases in the coolant system. Online, they are like 60 bucks, and to get a sh...

OK...it doesn't appear to be overheating. But how many of you have hard upper radiator hoses? All of the other vehicles I've had, I've been able to squeeze the upper radiator hose and feel the fluid running through it. On this car, after driving it awhile, it becomes pretty hard, like a wheel barrow...
