how would i tell?

I am cleaning out my garage of vw diesel parts below is what I have:

set of tail lights from 94 td jetta - $40

Set of hub caps from 94 td jetta - $50

instrument cluster from 94 td jetta - $40

put in different injector and still get noise. Time to pull the head and see what is going on in there and measure the piston protrusion. Sucks I didn't check the protrusion the first time, just figured if I used the same brand of piston that I would have been ok, guess I was wrong.

So just to update. I put in the new lifters and still have the ticking\tapping noise. I brought out the stethescope to see if I could find where the noise is coming from. what is the best way to measure the piston protrusion? Do I need a special dial gauge or can it be done with a caliper?

how much lower compression are we talking here?

Was helping a friend put together a 1.9td and since we don't have the original head gasket we are not sure what size to use. What would happen if we just used the 3 hole gasket which is the thickest just to make sure we have enough clearance?

I also have this bad feeling that it could be what Vince is talking about with the pistons just tapping the valves. If this is the case, since I have a 1 hole head gasket, if I went to a 3 hole gasket right away, bypassing the 2 hole gasket, what effects would that have if I only really needed the 2...

i bought a set of 8 lifters which i will put in next week.

Is it possible that it could be the lifters? The car is quiet when it first starts up and then after it is running for a little bit the ticking starts.

i reused the old lifters.

Does anyone on this forum sell new lifters? What is the part number for the lifters? I would want to replace all 8
