Re: Diesel Suddenly not starting- GP on all the time

I am embarrased to admit this....Rookie mistake. When I started this repair job a month ago, the first thing I did was replace the pass side motor mount. When I put it back on I forgot to hook up the ground strap. That appeared to be my ground problem. I think I fried my glow plugs so I am going to ...

Diesel Suddenly not starting- GP on all the time

Help!- I have an 84 Rabbit Diesel. The car was running just fine before I did a bunch of repair work. I pulled the car into my garage and removed the power steering rack, replaced the tie rod ends, replaced the ball joints, replaced the water pump, replaced the timing belt, and replaced the right an...

Re: Timing belt rides off center on the IM shaft pulley

Taking your advice to heart. I took the old pulley and chiped off the rest of the broken shoulder. I filed the edges down and took an emery cloth to it to smooth it out. Looked so good with the one side shoulder/one side flat you couldn't tell it was modified. Anyway, I pulled the shoulderless pulle...

Timing belt rides off center on the IM shaft pulley

I just changed the passenger side motor mount on my 1.6d. As I was removing the bracket, I inadvertently chipped the shoulder of the IM shaft pulley. I stole one of the newer "shoulderless" pulleys off of another engine I had laying around. I then buttoned everything back up. Problem now, ...

Inner Tie Rod change on a power steering rack

Hello- I have an 88 Cabriolet (with an 82 Rabbit diesel engine in it- thus my connection to this great website) and I need to change the inner and outer tie rod ends. I read through my bently, and because it is a power steering rack, apparently to change the rods the whole steering gear has to come ...

OEM Glow plug fuse or something aftermarket?

I was doing some work under the hood and noticed that somehow one contact of my glow plug fuse on the firewall had come out of the plastic housing- this made the fuse bend and break off. Now I am looking at having to replace the housing as well as buying a bunch of new fuses- which I will have to wa...

Any WVO/BioD People out in Eastern Iowa?

Hello- I recently relocated from Portland Oregon (where I was part of a good sized co-op of VW WVO/BD enthusiasts) to Cedar Rapids Iowa. I am wondering if there are any members to this forum out here in Iowa to are into water cooled VW's and WVo/BD. I ran 2 years in Portland on WVO and am thinking a...

5 Speed Tranny in my Rabbit leaking suddenly

I parked my rabbit in the garage and left for a month (I am moving cross country and started my new job before moving). Anyway, came back home this month to get the rabbit ready to ship and noticed a big gear oil-slick from under the car. In a month of not running how did I spring a big leak in my t...

Yep- I think it may have been the copper gaskets suddenly went bad. I ended up over the weekend pulling the whole filter housing and filter and useing a diesel filter and housing I picked up from a farm supply store a while ago. This housing and filter are about the same size as the old and filter t...

1.6l Diesel starts hard after filter change

OK- Is an '82 1.6L diesel. The housing is mounts to the wheel well and only has an inlet and outlet. The filter spins on the bottom of the housing. The inlet of the housing is a banjo fitting with what look like copper washers. The outlet is just a barb. Drove it more today- hard starts even just af...

1.6 Diesel starts hard after fuel filter change

OK- I am beside myself with frustration. My car now takes about 30 seconds to crank after I changed my fuel filter Heres the story- I took my (new remfg) pump in last week to get the cold start advance working. They discovered some debris (rust) in the plugging the return. They fixed that and the co...

Transmission shifting- reverse too close to 1st

So I ended up pulling the 5 speed Diesel trans out of my 91 Jetta and put it into my 88 Cabriolet Diesel (to replace a leaky 4 speed). I had it shifting OK for about 20 miles then ended up having to take it to a shop to have some work on the trans done. They removed the trans and resealed it. When I...
