ANOTHER VW Rabbit pickup......now I have two.

Dang Rabbits! I was always told they multiply quickly! Now I have three total! Over the summer, I picked up another WV Rabbit diesel pickup w/ a 1.6L. It has head gasket issues too, a few body issues, but hopefully nothing too big.... :? Looks like the rear bumper support was hit at some point...

Re: Converting a 1971 VW Camper to a Turbo Diesel

If ya ever saw the back end of a transit type rear engine bus/school bus, then you know what it's like to shove a bunch of stuff into a small compartment.

Nice work....looked at the links. I don't know if I would have the patience for a long, long project. I might.....

Re: Project: 1978 VW Rabbit

And we do this for fun, right? Yeah the Chevy 6.2 and 6.5 had a history of pump problems but sounds like fuel starvation or fuel shutoff solenoid dying or losing power. Maybe rig an LED to the solenoid power wire and put it somewhere you can see while driving to see if you are losing electrical sig...

Re: Project: 1978 VW Rabbit

Well, I'm working on anther vehicle I just got  . Ran fine when I drove it 200 miles/3hrs. But got a gremlin that came up after driving around here for a day or two. It's another diesel, a 94 Chev 2500 w/ 6.5L TD.....runs but dies....randomly. At least with it, I'm working on it laying over the...

Re: Project: 1978 VW Rabbit

LOL. Well, didn't get all my stuff ordered before Christmas, so the idea of working on the Rabbit during break didn't pan out. Just got the Kat's heater today.

Re: Project: 1978 VW Rabbit

I installed the bypass hose type and it works well. If I recall it's a one inch hose, cut about an inch out of the bypass hose and install the heater. Cost about $30 or so if I remember. I run of off a timer for 3 hours before I go to work. The bypass hose is the nearly vertical one running from th...

Re: Project: 1978 VW Rabbit

I think you have to remove the wiper assembly to fit it in there, I might be wrong. I'll look at it during Christmas break....the joys of working for a school. Hope I can "squeeze" it in there or something..... be nice to drive it...granted my daily drive (one way) is 5.5 miles ...

Re: 1978 Rabbit Diesel

Wow....all original AND with the original owners manual.

I had a hard time finding a 1.5L head, back in the day (few years back). My original had a crack.... nothing local, had to get it online. I wonder where I put the old head.....

Re: Project: 1978 VW Rabbit

No A/C and the rain cover is missing. Actually, even the blower assembly is missing. I can see the wires and the heater core. Previous owner took it out and tried to wire a 12V computer fan...... Like I said, the pic of the blower assembly is what I ordered and showed. Not sure if I can squeeze it b...

Re: Project: 1978 VW Rabbit

I ended up getting the heater motor that I posted a pic. The fun part will be installing it...I thought (and was incorrect) that I could "simply) sneak it via the top....NOPE. I guess I have to pull the whole heater plenum/box from the INSIDE just to install it....or am I way off on this (my sh...

An F head is a 12mm usually.
Thank you. Next silly question  , where is said casting number hiding? (Knowing my luck, it'll be behind the FI pump...)

Re: 1978 Rabbit Diesel

Welcome to the forum. I'm surprised how many 1978, 1979 VW Rabbits are showing up.... I too came here inquiring on a "new" 1978 VW diesel Rabbit that "followed" me home a few years back. Good luck w/ your Rabbit! (Is it still the original 1.5L or has someone upgraded it to a newe...

Re: Head gasket - which way?

I retorque studs too. Back them off a little and bring ARPs back up to 80. You should see them move a little farther. Exactly. Remember folks 1000km and not 1000miles! Bentley; bible it aint! Good thing I found this....my project has ARP studs on them. 1000km is about 620miles. So, one loosens and ...
