Re: time to move on..

all sold out.... the only thing left is some VW specific tools, which i can never manage to sell when i move a vehicle on whether it is a Bultaco Alpina, a Volvo 1800S, or the diesels.

i suddenly feel like i have this HUGE amount of free time in my life :-)

'til me meet again, eh?

Re: time to move on..

thanks, 82vdub! i do have a confession to make.... in the past year i restored a 32 year old BMW motorcycle and bought a 27 year old motorcycle for my wife. so i haven't taken this simplification thing *too* seriously! funny how the BMW list members are always insisting that you only send your heads...

Re: time to move on..

thanks, Bob. the appeal of these cars is very strong to me. however, i'm trying to par down possessions and reclaim some time. busy lives all of us, eh? i have to say it is pretty wonderful to just get in a car and go, without the tinkering. that said, i love a car that is 100% mechanical. anyway, i...

time to move on..

i've placed an ad over in the buy sell trade section for my cars, parts, and veg oil equipment. just wanted to thank this list and the moderators for all the help i've gotten keeping these things running and the great suggestions for improvements. it's been a very fun experience but now i'm simplify...

Re: Sad day, new beginings..

yeah, and you'd have to come with 2 drivers and a pickup for all the filtering stuff! oh, there's an 11mm complete engine and trans too.

gotta find the right wacko for all this stuff... :-)

Sad day, new beginings..

i think i'll be getting out of the diesel track... my 91 Jetta NA blew a crank seal this winter so i parked it and got my 91 Jetta ECO going... it ran great, really strong, then i burst a rear brake line that had rusted. patched in a new line section, replaced a rear wheel cylinder, went to bleed th...

Re: ECO mpg

yeah, this has me kinda stumped... the car runs great, no smoke even with the Cat removed, starts fine. the timing might be slightly retarded as there is just a slight increase in knocking with the cold start pulled but the records show 39mpg thru a couple timing belt changes. the ECO feels fast com...

ECO mpg

after my crank seal blew in my 91 Jetta NA, i got my parts car going and have been driving that... a 91 Jetta ECO. it came with good records and the previous owner logged fuel consumption over 150k miles and it always hovered around 39mpg. i've driven the car for one full tankful and got-- 39mpg. my...

Re: Crankshaft oil seal

so why *wouldn't* you take the whole carrier off to work on the seal? it is hard to get to the bolts?

Re: Melted Wires... Whee!

yup. that lack of ring or gap is indicative of over-torque. personally, i run a OO ga. cable from the battery to a Ford starter solenoid, then to a 4 fuse block with 4 separate 10ga wires. manual switch so i get as much glow as i can stand! i've also stopped my GP burnout by switching from Duraterms...

Re: Crankshaft oil seal

just blew the crank seal in my 91 on my way home from work. oil light came on 2 miles from home. went home, got 2 gallons of oil and used it ALL to get home! i was actually kinda indignant that it blew, but the car does have 380k miles... so given the cold weather right now, i didn't want to tackle ...

Re: why does retarded timing increase MPG?

this might be the crux of my issue.... i was under the belief that you timed for either power or economy.. advanced for power or retarded for economy. if this construct is wrong, then my question is answered!!

why does retarded timing increase MPG?

so i'm pondering this alot.... the IDI fuel quantity is a direct function of engine RPM and the position of the fuel metering valve throttle, correct? so why, when advanced timing results in more power does it not give better MPG than a retarded timing setting? seems for a given RPM and throttle pos...
