Re: Pump choices

I think it would be easier to replace the seal on the leaking pump in vehicle, versus replacing the pump. You know the pump works fine and the engine runs good, so keep ti that way. Now, you could swap pumps, but I think it'd be more work than replacing the leaky o-ring. I'll probably try it in the...

Pump choices

I have a new to me complete engine in my 82 Vanagon and everything is running great. The pump that came on the engine has started to leak from the O-Ring that seals the pump to the distribution block as described here. http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5311 I feel confident ...

Crack in my block. Looking for another one.

I found a crack on my block in an 82 Westy 1.6 TD. As the photos show it is like the whole corner of the block is about to come off. I don't think this can be repaired since the crack is so close to the edges. Does anyone have a block they would be willing to part with for a reasonable price? I rebu...

Re: White smoke under load

OK after a long delay I can finally get back to the van. I got the turbo drain sorted out. While the pan was getting modified I decided to haul the turbo to a shop for an inspection. They disassembled, cleaned and bench tested it and said it is in good shape. Now I am getting a strange howling sound...

OK, I ran a compression test on the frontmost 2 cylinders (my adapter will not fit behind the injection pump) and then pulled the pan. Frontmost cyl = 450 Second from the front = 475 Sorry, I still don't have access to my Bentley to know the cylinder #'s (it's actually sitting in a friends van @ GoW...

Sorry, gues I wasn't clear. I am going to sort out the drain line first, the reasses.

I was thinking of pulling the pan and welding in a bung for the line to attach to. Do you suggest tapping? The pan seems pretty thin for that.

So the remainder of the smoke is definitely from the turbo. I am going to modify my oil pan to get the return line to gravity flow, but it think the turbo needs a rebuild. After a little research this doesn't seem to be that difficult. Has anyone here rebuilt a KKK K24? Where is a good place to get ...

OK. I got the thing timed today (it was 1.3), set it at .97 The thing that was suprising was how easy the cam sprocket bolt broke loose. The sprocket had apparently slipped a bit since I couldn't get the bar in without adjusting the cam. Alot of the smoking is gone after the diesel purge, the power ...

Re: White smoke ? ? .

The 1.6 L Turbo is the finest engine that VW made up to now 2010 , IMHO. but to ask it to pull a Westy ? is asking a lot. hagar. Its sure does ask a lot from the 1.6 td, but it is better than the 1.6 na that came stock in this van. His name is Liam. I have memories from 3 of riding around in my mom...

Well after the diesel purge things are alot better. The car actually builds power on the top end and the smoking is not near as bad. The bubbles that I am seeing are very small and seem to come and go in relation to engine load. I tried to shoot a video of the bubbles but they are too small to show ...

Running the diesel purge right now. I am seeing tiny bubbles in the return line. The shaft seal is sounding more likely than anything now. I could be wrong, but some bubbling coming out of the pump is a natural function of the outlet bolt, so seal not corrupt. What has a seal to do with your unburn...

Alternator mounting

I posted some of my history with my 82 westy with a 1.6 turbo diesel in this topic. http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10205 The guy that I bought the van from said he installed a 100 amp alternator in the van and had to jerry rig some of the mounting brackets. The mounting hardware ...

I tried advancing and retarding the timing by ear this evening. I would only get a rattle upon retarding the timing. I still have smoke when retarded and advanced. The shaft seal idea is interesting, I will have to research that. Can I pull off the pulley and inspect the seal? Is there a bench test ...

White smoke under load

Hello New to the forum. I have an 82 Westy that I bought with a 1.6 turbo diesel (from an Audi A4 I think). I have had the van for about 10 years or so. The engine blew after a couple of years and I rebuilt it and added a new head from VWDieselParts.com about 8 years ago. Within the next year or so ...
