Alternator Light stays on 5 minutes

I have a 1981 VW diesel pickup and just had the Motorola alternator rebuilt,
Now the Batt, light comes on when I turn key on but it stays on for about 5 minutes with the engine running. Shouldn't go off when the engine starts??

2) 380 3) 340 4) 380 how do they sound?

The engine(1981 VWdiesel 1.6L) Is running w/lot of white smoke out of the exhaust.

I have the Ipump off for a rebuild so I guess the next step is to remove the head.

Also when the engine overheated It would not start so I waited several hours and I did start it but it ran very rough and white smoke came out the exhaust. The very least it has a blown head gasket. maybe a warped head.
