I found the Problem
I dropped a valve and ruined the head I think. I found a head it was freshly recuilt but has gotten wet. The valve seals look good, cam is rusty..
Anyone have any suggestions????????????

She was definitely smacking #4 piston before I reset the timing. I think she bent a valve. I plan on pulling the injectors tommorrow and doing a compression test. UPDATE
She jumped timing!!!!!! I reset the timing and she started but definitely has a new rattle What do I do next???

I probably screwed the pooch
I drove it about 2 miles after it started hammering. I know that was probably stupid but i had to get to work and I have always felt like i should have dug into the motor once I got it.. I gues my are cooled mentality is showing....

Im new to the diesel vw thing. I have driven an aircooled vDub for 20 years 175 miles a day so Im definitely use to maintenance. Can I get some tips on how is the best way to get parts cheap. I can rebuild an aircooled for 200 dollars but they want mor than that for a set of pistons. Thanks a million
