Re: OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

I used Hylomar the first time. in the picture above, you can see the blue residue on the block. I didn't use it this time because the FELpro instructions said to install dry, and it has wider orange sealant strips built in than the Victor Reinz did. Looks like I need to buy a machinist's straight ed...

Re: OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

UPDATE: I drove it 60 miles. Next morning I checked, and I have oil in the coolant. That is with a new head gasket and APR studs. I torqued them to 80 ft/lbs, ran the engine to operating temp, cooled and retorqued. I don't know what to do now. The only logical thing would be a warped/cracked head/bl...

Re: OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

Well I got it all back together, ran it up to operating temp, and retorqued the studs to 80 ft lbs. Very consistent. All 10 required about 1/8 of a turn to get back to 80. My detergent in a bucket idea worked out pretty good as well. I removed the thermostat and let the water/detergent recirculate f...

Re: OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

UPDATE: After waiting over a month for my headgasket to arrive, I finally pulled the head on my VW Tracker. And what did I find? No smoking gun. No breaks or mis-shaped o-rings. Because of the mess that happens when you pull the head, I couldn't tell where the oil was leaking into the coolant. I did...

Re: OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

Caerbannog: I read through the threads you linked. Here is a pic of what my head gasket oil port seal looked like when I pulled the head (after pulling the motor out of the Rabbit). This was leaking oil to the outside of the block at a little less than a quart per tank of fuel. The seal was separate...

Re: OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

Update: I'm getting more and more oil in the coolant. After a 60 mile drive, the next day I sucked about 3 oz of oil from the radiator. I think it is time to pull the head. This time I'm going to use ARP studs. Just want to make sure I have my info straight. Since I have 11 mm head bolts, I understa...

Re: OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

My Vacuum pump is hooked to the master cylinder on the suction side and the block (above the oil filter) on the other. I haven't put many miles on the Tracker since the oil change last week. But I can see that my baffle is helping to keep oil out of the intake. According to my gauge, my oil pressure...

Re: Tac wire?

I used the Acme Adapters kit. It wasn't too hard. There were some modifications that had to be done. You have to cut a little bit off of the end of the drive shaft in order to bolt the Suzuki fly wheel. That was scary, but I took my time and used an angle grinder with a cut off wheel. You also have ...

Re: OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

Thank you for the responses. I guess I should have done a full rebuild of the engine while I had it out. The cylinder walls looked really good, no scratches, gouges, etc. I'll keep doing what I have been doing for the last 2 years, which is running 5-40 synthetic and checking the oil level daily. My...

Re: Tac wire?

Don't know if you solved your tach problem yet, but I just installed a 1.6 NA into a Geo Tracker. I used the Dakota Digital converter box to make my tach work. I'm using the Geo alternator, and it doesn't have a W terminal, so I had to take it apart and tap the stator by soldering a wire to one of t...

OIL pressure and finding oil in strange places...

I recently pulled the 1.6 NA out of my 81 Rabbit and installed it in my 95 Geo Tracker. The engine had 118k, ran fine, it was just leaky, so I replaced the head gasket to stop the oil leak on the front of the motor, as well as the rear main, aux shaft, camshaft, etc.. The good news is that my head i...

So I think I found the problem. The gravity valve on the vent line between the tank and expansion bottle. I don't know where it was mounted from the factory, but I found it tucked high up in the wheel well on top of the other vent lines. The mounting bracket had rusted through, and someone stuffed i...

Thanks for the input. I didn't think the vacuum was normal either. Never happened on my semi or on the diesel pickups I have owned. I changed the fuel filter when I bought the car, and carry an extra one just in case. I haven't looked into the pickup screen. Can I get to it through the hole under th...

filler cap question UPDATE

Hello All! I'm a new owner/member from Michigan. In September I bought a 1981 Rabbit 1.6NA 5 speed, 106K miles. Runs good enough to get me 60 miles round trip to my job. I have already learned alot from this forum and from my Bentley Manual which was recommended here. My first of many questions is, ...
