Some insight about the engine codes would be helpful to me too. I'm looking for a 12 mm NA block to rebuild. My understanding is that all CK blocks are 1.5 liter with 11 mm threading, and all JK blocks are 1.6 liter with 12 mm threading. I believe that all CR blocks are 1.6 liter, but my question is...

A question about the donut gaskets - I previously had the fibrous type (kind of like steel wool with some sort of gasket material molded into the donut shape), and now I have a solid metal one. I believe I get a little leakage, and I'll try the Permatex advice. My question is which kind of donut gas...

Oops.

There was coolant in the air cleaner casting and intake runners too. It was there before I took the head off. Any ideas how that happens?

Yes - but I only drained it at the bottom hose by the thermostat. And I removed the 3 hoses attached to the head. I believe some coolant did drain out of the head when I was pulling it off. The car is parked nose-up on a fairly steeply inclined driveway. Are you thinking maybe some coolant left in t...

Head Gasket Symptoms Question

81 Rabbit 1.6 na with 11 mm head bolts - 30kmi flawless miles on re-ring and bearing job (with a new head gasket) - started running rough and billowing white smoke at a stoplight. Didn't overheat, just happened all of a sudden, and I shut it off within a few seconds. It overpressurized the cooling s...

Transaxle Dipstick

Dipstick for checking transaxle oil level through the speedometer cable hole. http://www.flickr.com/photos/13558423@N02/2170694143/ I came up with the correct oil depth for my '81 Rabbit's FF 5 speed by draining and refilling with the correct amount of oil (2 quarts + 4 fl oz for the FF). After refi...

Another potential source of water on the floor is plugged drain slots in the rocker panels. There are about 4 or so little slots approximately the width and thickness of a medium-sized flat screwdriver blade along the bottom of the driver's and passenger's side rockers. The slots on the driver's sid...

Here's a photo of a dipstick I cobbled together after draining and re-filling my '81 Rabbit's FF 5-speed. With 2 Qt, 4 oz of new oil in the transaxle, the oil level was 1.8 inches below the surface of the trans casting at the speedometer cable hole. This was measured perpendicular to the casting sur...

Thanks for the advice. I got the old studs out and the new ones in. Stripped one nut trying to get the 2-nut trick tight enough to turn the stud, and needed my biggest Vise-Grip for 3 studs, but they all came out. Overall, a big success. And no leaks from the super-cool new rubber gasket.

Thanks 3Bunnys for starting this thread. I've had the gasket & studs set in a box for a couple years, and haven't installed it because I was worried about breaking off a stud when I tried to remove the existing shouldered studs. What's the best procedure for removing the shouldered studs without...
