Re: Battery Dying?

Thanks for this advice. Very helpful. I picked up the battery and it's completely toast. They don't even expect it to hold what little charge it has overnight. Makes me imagine i'm overcharging the battery somehow and killing it. I'm going to get towed home tomorrow where i can get a new battery und...

Battery Dying?

I have a twice recurring problem i can't seem to diagnose - have looked at some threads here but can't seem to solve it. I drive a 89 1.6d NA jetta. Essentially my battery has died twice after about an hour of highway driving, two separate incidents, about three weeks apart. The engine was rebuilt a...

Re: Knocking on rebuilt engine

thanks for the replies. The engine wasn't completely warm, maybe had been running for ten minutes prior, though the knock sounds the same whether or not the engine is warm or cold, the only time i don't hear it is in the 30 seconds or so after a cold start. Suggestions on where on the head or block ...

Re: Knocking on rebuilt engine

Here's a couple videos, the knocking is a little more audible when the hood is closed in the second video.

I wonder if it could be a rod knocking? Could explain why the sound is clearer from under the chassis.

Knocking on rebuilt engine

Hi all, some of you may remember my lengthy issues last fall with a rough running engine, that ultimately turned out to be a spun crank bearing. That led to pulling, cleaning, and reinstalling the block, which led to low oil pressure that couldn't be solved, which led to buying a rebuilt engine from...

WTB connecting rod

Anyone happen to have a spare connecting rod I could buy or have any ideas on where to find one? Jack is out of them right now. EDIT - I just found one! I found a good used crankshaft, and towed the car in to have the block pulled, and cleaned. After measuring the old crank journals I found #3 was w...

Re: VERY Rough Running

So, was that cylinder just dumping fuel down into the cylinder that wasn't combusting, or was that cylinder not combusting because the compression was so low because of the worn bearing? Not sure if i understand what you're asking here - it would seem like this isn't an either/or. I replaced the #3...

Re: VERY Rough Running

I think the shop removed the cam (and probably the followers too) and then cleaned the head. I don't think they cleaned the cam before putting it back in. The bits on the cam are definitely metal. Seems possible it was introduced at the shop, but would be a pretty large coincidence. There was not mu...

Re: VERY Rough Running

Ack. well... Per usual you guys are on the money - there's metal bits galore here. Take a look at the cam lobes below. I couldn't see it until they had dried completely off. And that's after sending in the head to be inspected... so much for that shop. So clearly i'm deep in it here, and i'm far pas...

Re: VERY Rough Running

Erk is right. Yes it was sudden onset. I changed the oil only about 100 miles beforehand, and there was no metal on the magnetic plug at that time, for what that's worth. I've had somewhat decreased mileage (maybe 5 to 10 mpg) for about 600 miles, but that also coincides with a move to seattle where...

Re: VERY Rough Running

and we have a winner! The puny little shaving is all that's left of both halves of the #3 bearing. Now the question of why it shredded itself to death. Faulty bearing? Faulty install? Maybe timing slipped, crashed the valves into the piston and the bearing lost the battle? When i did my last ring jo...

Re: VERY Rough Running

Just pulled the oil plug - it's magnetic, and totally covered in metal shavings....

think we're onto something here...

Re: VERY Rough Running

A new discovery: Don't know how i didn't notice this before, but the piston in cylinder #3 is LOWER than it's partner in cylinder #2. about .6mm according to my feather gauge. It seems to be pretty consistent through out the cycle. Piston #3 reaches up to .3mm below the block face at TDC, but #2 is ...

Re: VERY Rough Running

Yea i don't really know the right terms for what they did. 20k ago he cleaned everything, checked for leaks, cracks, etc, and flattened out the head. Replaced valves, guides, springs, and inspected everything else he didn't replace, like the followers and their nubbins. Just got back from the shop a...
