Re: Engine ID

Looks like an AAZ to me.
The timing belt should be the same one an AHU TDI uses; many engine parts are the same.

Re: 97 1.9?

It is probably an AAZ, sold in Canada but not USA. It is indirect injection, pump is similar, the injectors are a little taller because they are two-stage.

intake too loud!!

AAZ in Kubvan, for now NA, no turbo, intake and exhaust manifolds from 1Y. AAZ in Kubvan.png The intake is loud: loud like muffler-fell-off loud. Not too bad at idle, but loud booming noise when under way. I'm gonna get a ticket if I go into town. I'm trying to work out the quietest muffler setup, b...

Re: Idle speed way too high

I turned out the residual fuel volume adjusting screw 6 turns. Moved the idle speed screw a little, it idles at 900 now. It wasn't obvious how much I should change the residual fuel vs idle screw; but it runs fine now (other than the noise- more in another thread). I'll play with it another time whe...

Re: Idle speed way too high

Thanks CarlosA I just read the Bentley residual fuel volume adjustment. I'll follow the procedure tomorrow. Its a bit confusing, understanding what is going on in the pump would help me more than following directions; I'm trying to read between the lines in the manual: I get the impression that the ...

Idle speed way too high

AAZ transplanted from 95 Golf to Kubvan: It idles at ~2000rpm. I backed out the minimum idle speed stop screw all the way, I backed out the idle speed adjusting screw till it came out, loosened that screw on the lever to move the, uh, sub-lever so that the idle speed adjusting screw can now move the...

Re: Higher idle runs hotter, what happened?

I'm having a similar problem: I got an AAZ from a '95 Golf, put it in my Kubvan (and then removed, rebuilt, and re-installed, dammit). The engine idles very high, almost 2K; it idled normal in the Golf. I backed-out what was obviously the idle screw, then learned in these pages that that was the res...

Re: How Tight is Tight For Timing Belt

Why not use the newer tensioner, 028 109 243 (used on later AAZ and TDIs?); it self-adjusts the tension- no guessing necessary. Not much more money. I never heard anyone suggest it, and I'm just a Glowplug, but I don't see why it wouldn't work perfectly on older motors. You'd have to drill a little ...

Oh, I want one!
But W isn't one of the terminals on that plug, is it?

Re: 83 rabbit Electrical - What's This? Where does it go?

On that alternator plug, the two red wires are B+, go to the battery and fusebox etc. The little blue one, F, feeds the alternator's field with +12v; there is no W connection for a tachometer on that alternator.

Re: Oil Leak - Valve Cover?

Do your valve cover studs have, um, clitellae[*], that keep the nuts from tightening the cover down all the way?

[*]clitellum: not sure what else to call it.

Re: AAARGH!!!! my new head has damaged t/b tensioner threads

That one stud could ruin an engine. My AAZ uses the TDI-style spring-loaded tensioner; that one is supposed to be tightened to only 15 ft-#, rather than 33 ft-#. 15 ft-# isn't much, makes me worry. My tensioner was broken when I got the motor, crushed under the nut from being tightened too much. I f...

Re: AAARGH!!!! my new head has damaged t/b tensioner threads

Perhaps you have the wrong stud- with inch threads? or-
Use a small drill bit to dig out whatever is impacted at the bottom of the hole, and chase the threads with a metric tap. Even if you have to drill and tap for an insert, there is no need to remove the head, can be done with hand tools.
