Re: Dash Shake when engaging clutch in 1st
I have found some clutches with the springs missing. That could be the problem. Even my 6-puck has springs. Can't imagine how bad it would be to start out using a solid/springless clutch. It would probably be a good idea to pull the trany and see what's going on. It would suck to have pieces flying ...

Re: Dash Shake when engaging clutch in 1st
Sometimes clutches wear funny.
If the clutch is used wrong.
Or maybe they put a 6-puck clutch in there as one of the mods.
Mine is hard to let out without some shaking.
Kind of an on/off switch.
Try revving it up and burning the clutch a little when you let it out. That might smooth it out.

Re: Clutch engage safety switch
That would work. Not easy to get bolt cutters down there if they do figure out. I picked up a box of padlocks at an auction. None of them had the combo. I figured all 6 combos out. So now I just need something to lock up. I have some MK4 projects now and recently had a clutch switch go bad, so funny...

Re: Altitude clatter from N/A
I think the governor mod just connects the accelerator lever more tightly to that vertical lever inside (forgot the name, ha). When I take my foot off the peddle it slows down just like normal. There used to be a little spring there that would give way when the peddle is stepped on. But that doesn't...

Re: FREE Transmissions
I really liked the dashers,... but the trany is in the wrong way, ha. I never learned how to work on them. He probably won't come back. I have a pile of 020, diesel, 5 speeds, I should sell the FF. And am starting to collect 02J tranys. I think they would work great hooked up to a hopped up 1.6TD.

Re: FREE Transmissions
Do you know what the code is?
It's stamped on the plate underneath.
If it's stamped GC; no self-respecting VW diesel owner would want it.
Screaming just to go 65.
But the GP or sometimes the GL has a high gear that equals a 5 speed.
Where are you located, what area?

Re: Altitude clatter from N/A
I bet mexican diesel has more wax than even our summer diesel has up here.
Might cause more advance.
Hagar would have loved it ha.
Yep, time to turbo it.

Re: The old direct-drive starters
I guess mozambiquer (or something like that) over on TDI club is the MK4 starter and alternator guy. He can get you parts or the whole thing and has written up a couple DIY for people to rebuild their own. He loves the valeo starters. I'm not sure he would be any cheaper but he is a good person/busi...

Good point about the MK4 starters weak spots.
There was just a post on tdiclub.com about what you described:

Re: The old direct-drive starters
What usually wore out on them was the solenoid. And they were kind of expensive. I've used a solenoid from a gasser starter and it worked well. When they are cranking slow I'll turn the key and hold it on start for a while. Then feel the cable ends, a hot cable end means resistance. If it's the sole...

Re: WTB: Vane style vacuum pump
I was thinking there is oil in those old ones. I really haven't opened one of those in awhile. But it seems like there would be some lubrication. The shaft still has an oil hole coming up from the bottom. The super early ones had a little pig tail looking line coming from the oil filter mount. So th...

Re: Diesel Fuel Tank Removal
That's a great point.
Fuel that has sat for awhile, with condensation adding water too it
will breed bacteria.
Even if you clean the tank, the seed for more bacterial growth will still be there.

Re: WTB: Vane style vacuum pump
Thanks, I need to go through the few I've gathered and see how well they work.
Sometimes I think the diaphragm style is more reliable.
Certainly easier to repair when they stop pulling.
They don't depend on oil pressure to work.
But I use the spot the old ones drain to, for a hose up to the CCV.

Re: Diesel Fuel Tank Removal
Yes, all my 1.6 diesels have a dash-mounted vacuum gauge connected to the front of the pump.
The old gasser Rabbits had a double-stacked banjo bolt that makes it look like a clean install,
no clamps.
Sometimes I tap the banjo bolt, 1/8" NPT, and screw a small barbed fitting into it.

Re: WTB: Vane style vacuum pump
I have shopped at hans/prothe. And almost all the parts worked great. Only subpar part i got from them is a MK2 manual steering rack boot, The one that goes from the column to the rack is very thin. But it works. I picked up a few of these vacuum pumps locally but need to test run them. I'm sure I'l...
