Re: Vacuum Pump Problem

A new vane pump is over $200......If I recall, [removed by moderator] has them on their web site. I know a VW salvage yard that had several of them a couple weeks ago, Autocraft in Salem, Oregon. (503) 362-3301 I picked one up for $25, 'no guarnatee's' a sthey don't test them. (They will exchange it...

Re: Intermediate Shaft bearing tool

I have 2 left for sale, and then production ceases while I re-tool to start producing a new valve spring compressor. (Wait till you see that one! You get to use both hands to get the keepers in and out.) I have both listed on EBay, get 'em while you can! If you're looking to remove and install inter...

Re: Rough running when engine cold

One injector is bad. Identify it by a process of elimination. Place a rag under an injector and loosen the fitting slightly.....enough to leak some fuel. Start engine cold. Do this for each injector until you find the one that doesn't affect how it typically starts right now, and you've located the ...

Re: Off topic - Garage Heaters?

I used to use a kerosene heater in an unheated and unattached garage...never again. Obviously you have to leave enough ventilation, but the worst thing was the way it makes metal rust. Bare metal will rust very fast from the use of a kerosene or diesel heater. (Ruined a lot of antique tools that wer...

Re: Odd oil pressure ?

1. 20seconds is pretty fast to go from 90-100 down to 20 psi on a cold engine. It sounds even too fast for an engine with bad intermediate shaft bearings. I'm inclined to think you have some of that red rtv stuck in an oil passage, or in the pick up tube. Did you remove the pick up tube to clean it?...

Re: how cold do you let it get before plugging in?

0 degree's....brrrrrr. You better have some anti-gel in your fuel, or it's not going to start at all. Assuming you do have some additive in there, I'd connect a timer on your extension cord you run to your block heater, to come on an hour before you head off to work. My '86 Golf 1.6 NA at 182,000 mi...

Re: List Your Homemade VW Specialty Tools Here!!!!!!!!

Looks like a long time since anyone posted anything? Below are 2 items. First is my intermediate shaft tool.....I've sold 23 so far on Ebay. The 2nd item is a prototype valve spring compressor I'm working on. Tests out great, need to fine tune it a bit. Went quite heavy duty on material. Stainless s...

Re: Intermediate Shaft bearing tool

We now have another one finished and for sale! As with the other recent models, the T-Handle is not only threaded to take the 1/2" x 13NC threaded rod, but also has a steel pin pressed in to prevent the threaded rod from turning. (Eliminates having to use a locknut on the T-Handle.) Also, the a...

Re: 1.6 oil use

A: Your oil pressure at start up and idle when hot is normal....
B: Using oil....look under valve cover for a black plastic baffle that covers the cam. That will help reduce blowby some extent.
C: If compression tests out okay, valve guide seals and possibly valve guides are worn.

Re: Intermediate Shaft bearing tool

So far, I've only received positive feedback on the tool. One customer wrote that 'it worked like a charm', and then ordered a second one for a friend of his. When I get an order ready to ship, I can set it up on Ebay.....that way you get tracking, and the ability to contest anything.

Re: aaz engine problem??

The 'scary issue' you refer to involved the crankshaft pulley, not the camshaft. .....I believe the issue was not caused by the timing belt at all, but rather by the alternator belt if I recall correctly. Apparently there was something about sudden deceleration that put tremendous torque on the cran...
