Re: got her running but....
I agree the most likely culpit is the back of the valve cover, sounds like you have pressure issues which could mean you have damaged or worn rings, although there are other things that will cause pressure. Start the car and open the oil fill to see if there is an air rush.

Re: fuel mileage
I wonder if you don't have a slightly botched timing belt change. I don't think it should be that much advanced under normal circumstances, but you never know, it should be a simple matter for you to retime everything from scratch with a dial indicator and go from there. I would get a compression ch...

Re: fuel mileage
My 80 dasher get 43 mpg at 65 and it is quite a bit bigger than a rabbit. I would check compression first, then your timing and your IP pump might be set too rich which would make the milage not so good. Also rebuilt injectors are like $35-$50ea so pretty cheap if all else fails.

Re: hard time starting my 1.6L diesel
I use a pencil magnet as well, expect really scraped up hands. I replaced my plugs 1 1/2 years ago and still has 2 go bad recently so that is what I would expect is going on or some other glow plug fault.

Re: eBay find: 1980 Dasher
Well, the guy who put the deposit on the dasher over 2 weeks ago hasn't come up with the rest of the money, so I gave him until saterday to get me the money. At this point I doubt he will come up with it. So if any of you are interested I will sell it to who ever shows up with the $1400 first. I hav...

Re: Interesting valve cover pressure resolution
There is a bunch of servos attached and I'm sure something is leaking or clogged. The vacuum wasnt spitting pure oil, it was mixed with air, definetly some sort of malfunction with the pump. I sold the car (if the guy ever decides to pay) so I'm not going to mess with it any more.

Re: Interesting valve cover pressure resolution
No it doesn't have the upgraded hose. It was actually connected properly to the engine, I think the oil that it was pumping in was clogging the lines and therefore causing the pressure. Much of the oil made it all the way to the intake, it had so much pressure. these diaphram pumps are for the birds...

Re: Bent valve not caused by bad timing?
A seized water pump can cause the belt to skip teeth and go out of time causing puston to valve contact.

Re: No reverse, 2001 Jetta TDI
No reverse is one of the common failures of the 01mfirst tranny, they are one of the worst modern auto trannys made, and they usually cant be rebuilt to last more rhan 30000 miles.

Re: eBay find: 1980 Dasher
Yeah, I sold this car a couple times and the buyers would tell me they didn't have the money at the last minute, so I finally lowered the price to $1400 and sold it locally(really quickly). Fixed the oil leak to boot. It was a good deal for the buyer and I bet the car has another 100,000 miles in he...

Interesting valve cover pressure resolution
Lately I've been having excessive pressure in my valve cover making it leak all over (1.5D) I have done compression tests and the engine averaged 350-310 cold and over 400 warm. So I was just not getting it. The block vent tube had very little pressure coming out of it, it all seemed to be in the he...

Re: Valve shims for 1980the dasher
I dont have the tools to get the shims out, I guess i need to rent the tools then order the shims then rent the tools again when i get the shims in. Good to know about the shims, thanks. All my valves are tight minus 3 that were in spec.

Valve shims for 1980the dasher
Do all 11mm heads use the same type shims? I understand there is an early and late style? Also does aomeone rent the whole shim kit so I can do the adjustment at one time without taking the shims out measuring and then having to order the proper shims?
